Following the successful run of the Sri Lanka Men’s team in recent times, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) extended his tenure and appointed him as a full-time head coach until the end of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Prior to his appointment, Jayasuriya operated on an interim basis with the Lankan team.
Under his supervision as an interim coach, Sri Lanka went on to achieve wonders. From defeating India in a bilateral ODI series for the first time in 27 years to winning a Test in England and subsequently thrashing New Zealand convincingly in a two-match Test series, Sri Lanka Cricket has made some heads turn with their inspiring performances off late.
Gearing up for the forthcoming challenge
After the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket granted him the position of a full-time head coach, Jayasuriya and his boys would be eyeing some major milestones in world cricket. A swashbuckling performance in the home Test series against the Kiwis have given the Lankans a rare opportunity of having a shot for an elusive spot in the WTC Final. Kamindu Mendis was the standout performer for Sri Lanka as he starred with the bat and broke a few long-standing records to finish as the highest run scorer in that series ending with a galloping 309 runs in only 3 innings.
This is also Jayasuriya’s first serious assignment in coaching. He has expressed in multiple interviews that he considers his main responsibility to be fostering an environment that allows players to perform with autonomy. The players seem to have responded positively to his approach, as several have publicly offered high praise for his methods.
Jayasuriya's first assignment as Sri Lanka’s head coach starts with the forthcoming limited-overs series against West Indies, which will take place in Dambulla and Pallekele starting on October 13 and stay tuned for the best cricket betting tips for the upcoming Sri Lanka vs West Indies white ball series.
