Stephen Fleming and Chennai Super Kings Part Ways After Historic 17-Year Run

Chennai Super Kings have mutually parted ways with head coach Stephen Fleming after 17 years, ending one of the most enduring partnerships in the Indian Premier League. The five-time IPL winners announced the decision on Monday.
“The Super Kings and Stephen Fleming have decided to mutually part ways, bringing to a close one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League,” the franchise said in a statement. It added that the decision was reached “with respect and gratitude, following a series of open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management.”
Fleming first joined CSK as a player in the inaugural edition of the tournament under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2008. After CSK finished as runners-up in their maiden campaign, the former New Zealand skipper was roped in as head coach ahead of the 2009 edition.
“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career in the IPL. I am proud of everything we have achieved,” Fleming said.
“Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come.”
Rupa Gurunath, owner of Chennai Super Kings, said Fleming had been “the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence.” A CSK press release also said he would always remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.
Fleming oversaw CSK’s golden run with the franchise qualifying for the knockouts and the Playoffs in 11 editions under his management. Under him, CSK reached 11 finals, 10 in the IPL and one in the Champions League, and won five IPL titles and two Champions League titles, according to the franchise statement.
The last few seasons have been difficult. CSK finished 10th and eighth in the next two seasons after narrowly missing the playoffs in 2024, while the franchise statement said they finished at the bottom of the standings for the first time ever in 2025 and missed the Playoffs for a third successive season, ending eighth earlier this year.
What's Next for CSK?
TimesofIndia reported that the franchise is reviewing its cricket operations, with former India batter Hemang Badani emerging as a contender to join the coaching set-up. It added that the franchise's top brass is currently in Dallas for the MLC, reviewing the last few seasons and planning the road ahead. The report also said trade discussions are underway, and a major decision on the entire coaching staff could also be made.
