Steve Smith praises Virat Kohli ahead of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

As the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, Australian batter Steve Smith opened up about his relationship with India's star player Virat Kohli, sharing insights into their friendship and competitive spirit. The series between India and Australia is set to begin on November 22, with the first Test in Perth.

In an interview with Star Sports, Smith revealed that he and Kohli often exchange messages and maintain a friendly bond. "We get on quite well, and share messages now and again. He’s a great guy and a wonderful player. It’ll be nice to face him again this summer," Smith said.

Smith also noted a unique quality about  Virat Kohli, describing him as an “Australian in thoughts and actions.” He explained, "The way he fully immerses himself in the game, rising to every challenge and trying to dominate the opposition – he’s probably the most Australian of the Indian players."

Despite their rivalry, Smith made it clear that he doesn't see his batting performances as a competition with Kohli. “It’s not about outdoing Virat or anything like that. It’s just about scoring as many runs as I can and helping Australia succeed. That’s what matters most," he added.

A Bond Beyond Rivalry: Kohli and Smith's Friendship

Both Smith and Kohli are considered part of the ‘Fab Four’—the elite group of modern-day batters that includes Joe Root of England and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson. Smith’s remarkable Test record includes 9,685 runs in 109 matches at an average of 56.97, while Kohli has amassed 8,848 runs in 113 Tests with an average of 49.15.

The bond between these two cricketing greats was evident during the 2019 World Cup, when Kohli intervened to stop the crowd from booing Smith in the aftermath of the 'Sandpaper Gate' controversy. Smith later thanked Kohli for the gesture, highlighting the mutual respect they share despite their intense rivalry.

Kohli vs Smith – A Battle of Titans

Kohli’s impressive Test record in Australia includes 1,352 runs at an average of 54.08, with six centuries in 13 matches. Meanwhile, Smith has been a dominant force in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring 1,887 runs in 18 matches at an average of 65.06.

The second Test of the series, from December 6 to 10, will feature a day-night encounter in Adelaide. Brisbane’s Gabba will host the third Test from December 14 to 18, followed by the iconic Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30. The series finale will take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7, concluding what promises to be a thrilling contest between two cricketing powerhouses.
