Torrent Group Completes Rs 5035 Crore Acquisition of Majority Stake in Gujarat Titans

The long-speculated takeover of Gujarat Titans by the Torrent Group is now officially a reality. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has granted its approval for the transfer of control from Irelia Sports India Private Limited (CVC Capital) to the Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group. This marks a new chapter for one of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) most exciting franchises.

A High-Stakes Acquisition

In a landmark deal valued at Rs 7522 crore, the Torrent Group has acquired a 67% stake in Gujarat Titans for a whopping Rs 5035 crore. The remaining 33% will continue to be held by CVC Capital, ensuring its ongoing association with the franchise. The sale, finalized only after securing all necessary approvals from the BCCI, underlines the growing valuation of IPL franchises as lucrative business assets.

Torrent Group, known for its diverse business interests spanning Healthcare and Energy sectors, expressed its satisfaction over the successful completion of the acquisition. In a statement, the company confirmed, "The acquisition has been finalized following the receipt of all necessary approvals, including from the BCCI."

BCCI’s Role in the Deal

As per IPL franchise regulations, the BCCI is entitled to five percent of every transaction conducted within the ownership group. With the Torrent Group's purchase of Gujarat Titans, BCCI stands to benefit from a substantial financial gain, reinforcing the IPL's status as a high-value sporting enterprise.

A Franchise on the Rise

The Gujarat Titans franchise has experienced impressive growth since its inception. Originally bought by CVC Capital in 2022 for Rs 5625 crore, the team’s valuation has now surged by approximately 34%, reaching an enterprise value of Rs 7522 crore. The franchise’s stellar debut season saw them clinching the IPL title in 2022, followed by a runner-up finish in 2023. However, last year, the team struggled, finishing eighth with five wins under the leadership of the talented Shubman Gill.

Torrent’s Strategic Move

The takeover by Torrent Group signals a strategic move to strengthen its brand presence by leveraging the massive popularity of the IPL. As the new majority stakeholder, Torrent is expected to bring in fresh investments and innovative strategies to further bolster the Gujarat Titans' growth.

Future Prospects

With Torrent Group at the helm, cricket enthusiasts and cricket betting sites for live betting are eagerly watching how the franchise’s journey will unfold. The franchise's growth trajectory and the group's aggressive acquisition strategy suggest exciting times ahead for Gujarat Titans and its loyal fanbase.

This takeover also highlights the growing business appeal of IPL franchises, where financial powerhouses like Torrent Group are investing heavily to ride the cricket wave. As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on how Torrent Group plans to reshape the franchise and continue its pursuit of IPL glory.
