WBBL 2024 - Sydney Thunder Appoint Phoebe Litchfield as New Skipper

Phoebe Litchfield will be the new skipper for Sydney Thunder ahead of the Women’s Big Bash League 2024. It will give a new dimension to her career as she becomes the youngest full-time captain in the history of WBBL.
The 21-year-old was offered a chance to take the leadership role from veteran Heather Knight who is recovering from the injury. Knight sustained an injury during the ICC T20 World Cup in Dubai. She is expected to miss half of the competition.
Litchfield Eager to Inspire Thunder to New Heights
Phoebe Litchfield felt honoured to become the youngest captain in WBBL. She expressed her happiness and said, "It's a huge honour to be named captain of Sydney Thunder. I've grown up playing for this club and learning from some incredible leaders, so to now have the opportunity to lead such a talented group of players is really exciting.”
The young captain will get help from her teammate and Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu. They also have Hannah Darlington who had previously led Thunder as a stand-in captain. Senior players, Shabnim Ismail and Sammy-Jo Johnson will also star power in the squad.
Meanwhile, Sydney Thunder general manager Treny Copeland speaks put on appointing Litchfield as new captain, "Phoebe becoming captain of Thunder just feels right. She's young, but her experience in the game makes this a natural progression. Phoebe has always been mature beyond her years, and her leadership qualities have been evident from the moment she joined Thunder.”
Litchfield has been playing for Sydney Thunder since the age of 16 and accumulated 1212 runs at an average of 24.24. She showed great character last season by scoring 309 runs at a strike rate of 130.37. The 21-year-old led the club to the eliminator last season.
