“When It's Bat vs Bat, I Switch Off the TV”: Bumrah's Love for Bowling

The second match of Team India in the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup was a nail-biting face-off against traditional rivals Pakistan at Nassau County Stadium where the former won by six runs. Chasing a below-par total of 119, the Indian batting line-up crumbled against Pakistan’s potent bowling line-up. Still, the Indian bowlers, especially, Jasprit Bumrah rescued the side with an outstanding performance.

Jasprit Bumrah was rightly awarded the Player of the Match for his spectacular bowling performance, including an economical spell of 3/14. When asked about his strategy for the match, Bumrah said it was to bowl accurately and strike a balance between controlling the run flow and taking the wickets. “When there is help, you can get eager for that special moment, but the plan was to keep it steady, keep the line and length right and use the big dimensions to our benefit,” Bumrah pointed out.

Pakistan, requiring a run rate of six per over, played quite well and were 72/2 after 12 overs. But, Hardik Pandya’s crucial breakthrough of left-handed Fakhar Zaman and Bumrah’s wicket of a settled Mohammad Rizwan on 31 off 44 helped the Indian situation. The lower order was not able to put up that sort of bowling and failed to maintain the required run rate. Thus, Pakistan fell short of the target by six runs.

Maintaining Composure is Key to Success

After the win, Bumrah praised the team’s composure and the great strategy that guided the team. "We were a bit disappointed with our total, but we stayed focused on what we could control. The turning point was maintaining our composure and sticking to our plans despite the challenging conditions," he added.

India’s top order came under pressure after losing players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the early overs. Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel came together briefly but their collapse limited India to 119 runs in 19 overs with an over left. Though the total score amounted to a small figure, Indian bowlers executed themselves well as they played according to the conditions with stylistic precision to build pressure on the opposing team.

Avoid Overdoing and Focus on What Needs to be Done

Bumrah, who got the wicket of Babar Azam in his initial attack, acted as a weapon for his team till the end of the match. His accurate line and length along with the variations assisted in strangling the Pakistani batters. He said, "It was crucial to avoid overdoing it and just focus on adding pressure. The large boundaries and our consistent lines made it difficult for them to score freely,"

Jasprit Bumrah also talked about the process of coming back to effective form after the injuries and stressed the need to stay more within the parameters that were in the player’s control. "I try to stay in the present and not get distracted by external pressures. It’s about solving the problem in front of me and staying composed," he remarked.

The victory revived India in the World Cup tournament with two more group-stage matches lined up next. The encouragement from the audience, mainly the Indians and the Asians, was also a motivating factor for the team. "The energy from the fans was incredible. It felt like playing at home, and their support made a huge difference," Bumrah acknowledged.

Advocating for the importance of bowlers, Bumrah went sarcastic about high-scoring run-fests.  "When it's bat vs bat, I switch off the TV," he said. "I've been a fan of bowling since childhood. When there is a challenge between bat and ball, that is the game I like. No complaints. I am very happy."
