Cleveland Cavaliers

Game 2 was the Harden problem made undeniable. Mitchell scored 31 points and Allen bounced back with 22 points and seven rebounds, but Harden missed 10 of 13 shots and was limited to 10 points with four turnovers including one with 33 seconds left when the Cavs trailed by just six. Harden went 3-for-13 from the field and was a team-worst minus-15. The Pistons sought out mismatches and relentlessly attacked him on defence, and when he went to the offensive end he could not get his shot to fall or create for teammates the way he did in the Raptors series. This is the fourth time in his playoff run this season that Harden has had more turnovers than made field goals in a game.

Back home at Rocket Arena where they went 4-0 in the first round the Cavs desperately need a response from everyone not named Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell at 30-34 points is the expectation he is too good and too motivated to have a quiet game in a must-win home environment. But the real question is what version of Harden shows up. He averaged 28 points and 10 assists against the Raptors and was the reason Cleveland made it through in seven. A 20-24 point, seven-assist performance from him with cleaner ball handling is not asking the impossible. Allen should stay in the 18-22 range; his 22-point Game 2 showed he can punish Detroit's frontcourt when given space. Strus going 0-for-4 from three in the fourth quarter after scoring 19 in Game 1 is the swing factor if he finds his shooting touch at home, Cleveland has four legitimate scorers and a real path back into this series.

The Cavaliers on average score 109 points per game they score 46.1% from the field and are ranked 6th in the league, and 33.2% from the arc and are ranked 11th in the league. The Cavaliers grab 43.3 rebounds per game and Ranked 6th in season.

Detroit Pistons

Cunningham had 25 points and 10 assists in Game 2, doing it the hard way five points in the first half before exploding in the second half with pull-up jumpers, fadeaways over Harden, and a perfectly timed dunk feed to Duren in the closing seconds. Daniss Jenkins was the difference off the bench, hitting a buzzer-beating three to end the third quarter and finishing with 14 points. Harris scored 21 points and the Pistons attacked Harden on defence every single time they got the chance. Detroit did not need to be perfect, they just needed to be smarter than Cleveland in the fourth quarter, and they were.

On the road in Cleveland, the Pistons need Cunningham to pick up where he left off. He averaged 36.3 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.0 rebounds across Games 5, 6, and 7 against Orlando when his season was on the line the road environment of Rocket Arena should summon a similar response. Expect him in the 28-34 range with smart ball movement and continued exploitation of Harden in the pick-and-roll. Harris at 18-22 points is realistic if he keeps making the mid-range looks that defined his Game 2. The Pistons shot 48.6% from the field at home this season and boasted a 35-10 home record. They are a different team on their own floor, but they have the quality to steal one in Cleveland if the fourth-quarter execution matches Games 1 and 2. Duren vs Allen in the paint is the frontcourt battle that keeps giving Duren's activity and Allen's physicality have made it one of the most competitive individual matchups left in the East.

The Pistons, on average, score 103.9 points per game, they score 44.5% from the field and are ranked 9th in the league, and 35.1% from the arc and are ranked 7th in the league. The Pistons grab 46.2 rebounds per game and ranked 4th in the season.

Cleveland's home record in these playoffs is 8-1 over the last two postseasons. Rocket Arena does something to this team — the crowd is engaged, Mitchell feeds off it, and the defence tightens up in ways it simply has not in Detroit. The Harden problem is real and it is not going away, but a bad road game from him at Rocket Arena looks very different when Mitchell is getting 31 and the building is rocking. Detroit's five-game winning streak is real, Cunningham's form is excellent, and the Pistons have not faced a hostile playoff crowd at this level since 2008. That inexperience is the one variable nobody can account for until the tip-off.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were 52-30 this season. They finished 2nd in the Central Division and 4th in the Eastern Conference. They trail in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Detroit Pistons, 2 games to 0.

The Detroit Pistons were 60-22 this season. They finished 1st in the Central Division and 1st in the Eastern Conference. They lead in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, 2 games to 0.

The Pistons had a 3–2 edge in the last four meetings this season. The Pistons averaged 110 points per game while conceding just 91.5, and the Cavaliers averaged 101.5 points while giving up 104 to Pistons. The average total points per game sits at approximately 222.

Cade Cunningham 30.6 5.1 7.4 1.0/0.9

Cleveland at home facing elimination from a series they were supposed to control this is where Mitchell-led Cavaliers teams have historically found another gear. Harden will be better with a full day of rest and the comfort of Rocket Arena. Strus will find his shot. And the crowd will do to Cunningham's supporting cast what it has done to every visiting team all postseason. Cavaliers win Game 3 and get themselves back into the series.
