Bengal beat Gujarat by 8 wickets
Bengal began their campaign in style with a comfortable eight-wicket victory over Uttarakhand. It was a complete performance against a relatively easy side, but Gujarat might offer better resistance. However, given the resources they have, Bengal look well covered for any opposition this time.
The batting line-up looks well set to put together another strong performance. Sudip Chatterjee, in particular, will be a central figure after topping their run charts last season with 441 in eight innings, and following it up with a top score of 98 in the first innings of Bengal’s previous match.
Skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran offers stability at the top and will look to keep the runs flowing after a breezy unbeaten 71 off 82 in the second innings of the last match. Sudip Kumar Gharami and Anustup Majumdar bring plenty of batting depth in the middle order and have the ability to make an impact with 40+ scores.
Mohammed Shami was the standout in the bowling attack in the first match, finishing with seven wickets in the match. He’s the most experienced bowler in the team and will look to carry this momentum forward. Ishan Porel and Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal chipped in with five wickets each while also keeping the scoring in check. Akash Deep and Vishal Sunil Bhati add further strength to this attack.

Gujarat’s first match of the season ended in a draw against Assam, as both teams scored over 300 runs in their first innings, and there was no time left for a result to be made, even though Gujarat had Assam at 192-6 in their second innings.
This batting lineup did a solid job in the first game, and it has the firepower to post big scores in the coming games as well. Openers Aarya Desai (101) and Abhishek Desai (96) impressed the most in the first match and will look to provide another stable start to the team.
Jaymeet Patel is their main star batter, who had a successful run last season, with 661 runs in nine matches at an average of 51, which included two centuries and five fifties. Skipper Manan Hingrajia, too, is a strong asset and collected 603 runs in nine matches last season at 46.38.
Another batter to watch out for is Urvil Patel, who can step up in the middle order with steady contributions.
In the first match, Siddharth Desai impressed the most with five wickets at an average of 22.60. Vishal Jayswal also chipped in with four wickets. As a whole, this is a capable bowling unit, with genuine wicket-takers like Arzan Nagwaswalla as well. However, all eyes will be on Desai, as he was their top wicket-taker last season with 37 scalps at an average of 24.67.

Morning sessions can bring some shine and nip off the surface at Eden Gardens as the ball is new. As the match progresses, batters tend to find it easier to settle in, especially through the course of day 1 and day 2. By the third and fourth days, the surface may slow slightly and offer more turn, especially in the evening sessions, giving spinners a useful role.
The weather in Kolkata is expected to be pleasant and clear throughout the match days.
The team batting first at Eden Gardens will look to set a score of over 300 to stay ahead in the contest. First innings are usually the trickiest here, so if the batting team can conquer that, half the battle will be won.
The team winning the toss might look to field first to try to utilize the friendly conditions in the first innings and get the opposition out for a low score.
Bengal have started the Ranji Trophy with a bang and will look to build on that momentum as they take on Gujarat at home. Bengal are usually very good at home and looked superb in their season opener. Gujarat’s batting shone in their first match, but concerns remain over their bowling unit’s ability to take 20 wickets. As things stand, Bengal, with winning momentum and home advantage, have the upper hand in this contest.
Back Bengal as the winners of this match.
