China and Maldives cricket team will lock horns in the opening game of the Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Sub Regional Qualifiers 2026 on Thursday, 8th October. The venue for this match is Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur and the scheduled start time is 11:30 IST.

China enter the tournament with a poor run of form in the T20 format, while Maldives are going through a disappointing form in the shorter format. Both teams would eye a winning start in the sub regional qualifiers.

H2H history: China and Maldives haven't had any T20 International match against each other.

China Preview

China will begin their campaign in the Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Sub-Regional Qualifiers against Maldives, with the two sides set to meet for the first time in the T20 format. The Chinese side will enter the competition with limited experience and will face a challenging task against more established teams in the qualifying group.

China endured a difficult campaign in the Asian Games qualifiers, failing to win either of their matches and exiting at the group stage. They began with a heavy defeat against Nepal before suffering another loss to Malaysia.

Nepal posted a massive 313 before bowling China out for just 92 in the opening game. Their struggles continued against Malaysia, as China managed only 84 in the first innings before Malaysia chased down the target in just 7.5 overs. The results highlighted China's shortcomings with both bat and ball.

Zheng Shenjian could be one of the players to watch for China after he impressed against Nepal with a quickfire 31 off 15 balls. Zong Yuechao is another batter who will be expected to make an impact after scoring 29 runs in the same match.

China will be hoping for a much-improved performance across both departments in this campaign. A victory would be a significant achievement for the side, particularly given their lack of experience at this level. Their opening clash against Maldives will also mark their first-ever T20 meeting with the island nation.

China Predicted Playing XI:

Meng Jianhao (wk), Deng Jinqi, Zheng Shenjian, Zhuoyue Chen, Tian Senqun, Liu Qingze, Qi Shuai, Yang Wangjie, Ma Qiancheng, Zong Yuechao, Zhao Zhilong

Maldives Preview

The Maldives national cricket team will take flight to Malaysia for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Sub Regional Qualifiers. Their first clash is against China. Both teams will face each other in the competition for the first time. Maldives will head into the contest with considerably more recent experience at this level and will be looking to start their campaign with a victory.

The Maldivian side showed signs of improvement during the 2024 Asia Sub-Regional Qualifier, finishing the tournament with two wins from six matches. After suffering four consecutive defeats against Malaysia, Singapore, Kuwait and Hong Kong, they bounced back strongly with victories over Myanmar and Mongolia. The Cricket Board of Maldives also highlighted the team's improved batting performances during the campaign.

Their final game of the tournament produced their most convincing performance. Maldives posted 178/6 against Mongolia, their highest T20I total at the time, before bowling them out for 61 to secure a massive 117-run victory. Yoosuf Azyan was the standout performer, scoring 55 before taking four wickets.

Yoosuf Azyan will once again be one of the players to watch. The captain has demonstrated his ability to influence games with both bat and ball, while Gedara Wijesingha also impressed against Mongolia with a 56 off 39 balls. In the same match, Azyan Farhath produced a superb spell of 4/5 to help complete the emphatic win.

Maldives will be keen to avoid a repeat of their struggles against stronger opposition. In 2024, they were beaten by 94 runs against Malaysia, 47 runs by Singapore, 142 runs by Kuwait and nine wickets by Hong Kong. However, their strong finish against Myanmar and Mongolia demonstrated that they can be dangerous when their batting and bowling click together.

Maldives Predicted Playing XI:

Hassan Haziq Rasheed (c/wk), Shafraz Jaleel, Ismail Ali, Yoosuf Azyan Farhath, Ashan Yapa, Adam Nasif Umar, Harsha Amarasinghe, Mohamed Rishwan, Ibrahim Rizan, Ahmed Ameel Mauroof, Ismail Nazwan

Weather Conditions

The weather at Kuala Lumpur on 8th October is expected to be cloudy with a high of 32°C and a low of 25°C, along with 65% chance of rain and north winds at 8 kph.

CH vs MDV Pitch Report

The surface at Bayuemas Oval is good for batting. It also offers a good balance between bat and ball. Spin assistance will be there in the middle overs. In the last five matches at this ground, the average first batting score in the Men’s T20I is 132. It is a quality T20I batting surface where batsmen need to play aggressively.

Score prediction:

If China bat first - 110-120 runs

If Maldives bat first - 130-140 runs

Toss: To Bowl

In the last five Men’s T20Is on this surface, chasing sides won four games. 157 remains the highest successful run-chase on this ground this year. It’s the first game of the tournament so we may expect a decent score. Both teams have had earlier success while bowling first and they will look to bowl first in this fixture as well.

Toss Prediction: China to win the coin toss.

Maldives enter this contest as the favourites to win this match. Against China, Maldives will start as the more experienced side and will see this as an excellent opportunity to open their campaign with a win. Their recent performances suggest they have the firepower to dominate if their key players deliver, while China will be hoping their inexperienced squad can produce an upset.

Maldives to win.
