Chennai Super Kings face Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 22 of IPL 2026 at Chepauk, their home ground. After starting the season with three straight defeats, CSK finally opened their account with a solid 23-run win over Delhi Capitals at home, which lifted them to ninth in the standings. KKR, on the other hand, find themselves at the bottom after managing just one point from a washed-out game against Punjab. Three losses have hurt them badly, leaving their NRR at a worrying -1.315. That makes this game very important for Kolkata as they look to get back on track. However, taking on CSK in Chennai is never easy, especially with the home side coming in with confidence after their recent win. It sets up a good contest. Can CSK build on this, or will KKR find a way to turn things around?

Chennai Super Kings finally have something to cheer about after picking up their first win of the season, beating Delhi Capitals by 23 runs at home, where they successfully defended 212. The victory ended a run of three losses and helped them move up to ninth place from the bottom, while their net run rate also improved from -2.517 to -1.532.
Their batting has started to click, with three scores above 200 in a row. Sanju Samson got back among runs after three low scores, playing a superb unbeaten 115 off 56 balls in the last match against DC. Ruturaj Gaikwad, however, has not looked comfortable at the top and will be hoping for a solid innings soon. He does have a good record against KKR, averaging 47, which could help his confidence.
Ayush Mhatre and Sarfaraz Khan have added support in the middle order. Both have chipped in with useful contributions, with Mhatre scoring 133 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 160.24.
Shivam Dube has made 89 runs at a strike rate of 164 and will again look to go after spin in the middle overs. He has done that role often and strikes at 156 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, making him a real threat against KKR’s spinners.
Jamie Overton has also played an important role this season, adding quick runs down the order at a strike rate of 154 and also picking up five wickets.
He, along with Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed, forms a strong pace unit. Khaleel’s left arm angle could trouble Ajinkya Rahane and Fin Allen. Noor Ahmad has struggled so far, managing just one wicket in four matches while conceding 11.30 runs per over. The addition of Akeal Hosein could help, given his record of 99 powerplay wickets in T20s and his ability to trouble KKR’s batting line-up.
Key Players: Sanju Samson, Dewald Brevis, Jamie Overton
Powerplay Score Over 56.5 @ 1.85
Chennai Super Kings have been impressive in the powerplay overs at MA Chidambaram Stadium this season, averaging 59 runs in the first six overs. The overall average powerplay score at this venue in IPL 2026 is 63 runs, with all scores this season falling in the 55–70 run range.
Sanju Samson Total Runs Over 28.5 @ 1.85
After three low scores, Sanju Samson bounced back with a match-winning 115* against DC, proving his class once again. With 137 runs in just 4 IPL 2026 matches, he's hitting his stride. His record at MA Chidambaram Stadium stands strong with 181 runs in 7 matches, and a solid 542-run history vs KKR gives him confidence. Sanju Samson is highly likely to score over 28.5 runs.
Total Fours Over 16.5 @ 1.95
Chennai Super Kings are averaging 21 fours per match at MA Chidambaram Stadium this season, while overall across their last four matches they are averaging 17.75 fours per match. With the fast outfield at the newly relaid surface and their aggressive batting approach, backing CSK to clear the 16.5 fours line is a well-supported pick for today.
Sanju Samson(w), Ruturaj Gaikwad(c), Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Gurjapneet Singh, Khaleel Ahmed Impact Subs: Matthew Short, Akeal Hosein

Kolkata Knight Riders have had a tough start to the season, losing three of their four matches so far, with their only point coming from a washed-out game against Punjab Kings. In their latest outing, they went down in a close contest against Lucknow Super Giants by three wickets. LSG were chasing 182 and were struggling at 128-7 before Mukul Choudhary played a stunning knock of 54 not out from 27 balls to take them home on the final delivery.
KKR are now placed at the bottom of the table with just one point and a net run rate of -1.315. Their performances in both departments have been inconsistent, and they will need a much stronger showing if they want to get their campaign back on track soon.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been their standout batter so far, scoring 155 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 158. He has already registered two fifties and looks well set to get another solid score here. Captain Ajinkya Rahane has also chipped in with 124 runs at a strike rate of 155, though his scoring rate tends to slow down after the powerplay, where it drops to 130 since IPL 2023. That makes the first six overs very important for him, as he has scored at 170 during that phase over the last three seasons.
Finn Allen is another player who can give them a quick start, as he is striking at 205 this season. If he spends some time at the crease and faces more than 25 balls, he can have a big influence on the result.
Cameron Green and Rinku Singh have not contributed much so far. Out of the two, Green looks more capable of scoring over 30 runs at a strike rate above 150, especially after his unbeaten 32 off 24 in the previous game.
Vaibhav Arora has been their top wicket-taker with 5 wickets, though he has gone for 11.41 runs per over. Kartik Tyagi has taken three wickets but has also been expensive, conceding over 11 runs per over. Varun Chakaravarthy was left out in the last match after three poor outings but could return here, as Chepauk tends to help spinners. Varun, Sunil Narine, and Anukul Roy offer decent spin options, though they will need to be careful against Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis, who like taking on spin.
Key Players: Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Ajinkya Rahane, Sunil Narine
Angkrish Raghuvanshi Total Runs Over 23.5 @ 1.85
Raghuvanshi is having a phenomenal IPL season so far where he has scored past 30 runs in all the three matches he has played amassing a total of 155 runs this season including two half centuries. We predict another good knock from Raghuvanshi in today's match and predict his score to be over 23.
Powerplay Score Over 57.5 @ 1.80
Kolkata Knight Riders have also been highly aggressive in the powerplay overs, scoring at close to 11 runs per over in the last three matches. However, they have conceded close to 10 runs per over in the first six overs this season.
Total Fours Over 15.5 @ 1.80
KKR have been a strong boundary-hitting side this season, averaging 18 fours per match. They will look to be aggressive with the bat and, with MA Chidambaram Stadium's fast outfield aiding boundary scoring, we back them to hit over 15.5 fours against CSK in today's fixture.
Ajinkya Rahane(c), Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Angkrish Raghuvanshi(w), Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Ramandeep Singh, Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kartik Tyagi Impact subs - Manish Pandey, Vaibhav Arora

The weather in Chennai is set to be hot and humid, temperatures sitting around the mid to high 20s as the evening progresses, with rain extremely unlikely. There'll be partial cloud coverage and soft winds that won't bring much comfort, which means players and fans alike could find themselves dealing with somewhat sticky conditions once the game starts.

Six matches were played at Chepauk during IPL 2025, where the average first innings score was 164, and only two totals crossed the 190 mark. This season at the same venue, two games have taken place so far, and three out of four innings have gone past 200. The highest of those was CSK’s 212 -2 against DC in the last match.
Run-scoring tends to be easier during the powerplay when fielding restrictions are in place, but it gets tougher as the innings go on, especially in the middle overs when spinners come into play. Even with that slowdown, the surface should stay good enough for batting across the game.
If CSK bat first, they could once again look to push towards the 200 mark, having done so in each of their last three outings this season. KKR, on the other hand, have had an up and down run with the bat, so they might aim for something around the 180 to 190 range in this match.
Total Match Sixes Over 18.5 @ 1.80
When CSK's batters get going, sixes follow in abundance, as seen in the last match against Delhi Capitals where they hit a total of 9 sixes. Across the last two matches, CSK are averaging 10 sixes per match, while KKR are averaging 7.5. The last match between these two teams produced a total of 20 sixes, and we predict another high six-hitting contest with the total going over 18.5.
Total Match Score Over 388.5 @ 2.10
MA Chidambaram Stadium IPL 2026 stats show that this venue rewards bettors who understand its unique conditions. The last two matches played at MA Chidambaram Stadium this season have been high-scoring affairs, with three of the four individual scores exceeding 200 runs. The average total match score this season at this venue is 410 runs, reflecting how dramatically the surface has changed since the relaying.
Total Match Fours Over 32.5 @ 1.90
The last two matches played at MA Chidambaram Stadium this season have both seen over 32 fours hit, with the quick outfield and batter-friendly conditions consistently driving high boundary counts. With both teams averaging around 17–18 fours per match this season, we predict the combined total to comfortably exceed 32.5 in today's contest.
CSK to win the coin toss @ 1.90
We are backing CSK to win the coin toss in today's match against KKR.
17 of the 18 IPL 2026 games completed till now have seen the toss winners opt to bowl first. Teams generally favor batting second in night matches across Indian stadiums. Both captains in this contest will almost definitely choose to chase if they win the toss, continuing what has been the overwhelming preference so far this season.
Kolkata Knight Riders are under pressure after losing three matches so far and not managing a single win. They need a much better display to get their campaign going. Their batting has not been consistent, and they must step up if they are to compete with CSK at home. The bowling has also been below expectations, and Varun Chakaravarthy’s dip in form has only added to their worries.
CSK, meanwhile, will feel confident after their win in the last match. Playing at home again, they will look to build on that result against a side that is struggling. Their batting has been in good form, with three straight totals above 200. If the bowlers can deliver another solid effort, they should be in control. KKR may look to chase and rely on Finn Allen, Ajinkya Rahane, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi for runs. Otherwise, CSK hold the edge right now.
Chennai Super Kings are our picks for the winners of this match.
