Rajasthan Royals’ mental battle that they must win

  • In the last seven games the Rajasthan Royals have managed only one win and the side lacks confidence at the moment
  • Rajasthan Royals’ bowling attack seems one-dimensional and other than Jofra Archer no other bowler is troubling batsmen
  • Chennai Super Kings though not in the best form have more experience in their side which is an advantage for them

The 37th game of the Indian Premier League 2020 between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals would be a very important one for both the sides. This might decide their fate for the rest of the tournament on whether they would be able to qualify for the playoffs. Both these sides have three wins from the nine games they have played so far in what has been a bad season in both the camps.

Rajasthan Royals threw away another game from a winning position as they went down against the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 7 wickets while the Chennai Super Kings as well failed to hold onto their nerves in the final moments of the game to win against Delhi Capitals after putting up a big score on the board. The stakes involved are high for both the teams at the moment and we expect to see a good contest between them.

Chennai Super Kings Preview

It has been a sorry state of affairs in the CSK camp as they have lost the last three out of four games. Their bowling attack looked clueless against an aggressive Delhi Capitals where they lost by 5 wickets in the last over. Skipper MS Dhoni hasn’t been in this situation before in the IPL with the Chennai franchise. He will have to lead from the front and make contributions with the bat for his side to win this game.

Their batsmen did well in the last game and the side would be looking for a positive start from Sam Curran and Faf du Plessis. Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu have scored runs this season and this is good news for the team. It is the form of MS Dhoni which is bit of a concern right now. Ravindra Jadeja has done well with the bat but Dwayne Bravo is suffering from lack of form which is something he will need to get over for the side to win.

Sam Curran and Deepak Chahar will need to get early wickets. This is something we haven’t seen so far in the season regularly. Their bowling attack has overall done badly as was in display during the last game. This is what needs to be fixed by the side as they will look for an improved bowling performance from the likes of Shradul Thakur, Jadeja and Bravo in this game.

Best Batsman – Faf du Plessis
Best Bowler – Sam Curran

Rajasthan Royals Preview

Steven Smith’s side seems to have lost clue on how to win games. For two games in a row they have managed to earn a defeat from the jaws of victory. They lost to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last game leaking 46 runs in the last three overs. A berth in the playoffs now seems a distant dream and the side will need to win this one by a big margin. They had defeated CSK earlier in the season and this should serve as a confidence booster.

Their batting did well in the last game with Robin Uthappa and Ben Stokes providing a good start. They will have to stick to their form in this game as well. Sanju Sampson seems lost after his initial brilliance in the season. Smith and Jos Buttler did well in the last game and shall be looking to take on Chennai’s bowlers in the middle overs. Rahul Tewatia and Jofra Archer add good hitting abilities down the order for the side.

Jofra Archer has been the sole performer with the ball for the side but he too seems to have lost form in the last few games. Along with Shreyas Gopal he will have to strike early in this game. Jaydev Unadkat is looking completely out of rhythm for now and this is adding pressure on the bowling attack for the side. Karthik Tyagi and Rahul Tewatia need to assume additional responsibilities with the ball for the side.

Weather Conditions

The weather conditions would be perfect at Abu Dhabi where the skies would remain clear and dry during the game. Fast bowlers are likely to struggle on this wicket and batsmen will enjoy these conditions. A score in excess of 170 runs should be a good one on this surface for the side that bats first.

Venue Details

Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi is a big venue and perhaps the most challenging one to bat on in United Arab Emirates. The outfield is fast and this allows batsmen to score runs when they time the ball well. The conditions at this venue are tough for the fast bowlers. Spinners have done well as they can use the slowness on the surface to good use.

Toss: To Bowl

We have seen the pitches slow down a bit in the last two games at this venue and batsmen are struggling to get going which hasn’t been the case in the two other venues. The last two games here have seen the sides chasing the total winning comfortably. The side that wins the toss is likely to opt for fielding first in this game.

The two sides have been through a similar trajectory this season and currently share equal number of points. For Rajasthan Royals the problems seem to be on the mental side as the team has been losing games in the mind before play gets over in the field. They will have to fire in this game. Chennai Super Kings is an experienced side and they would require better performance from the bowlers who led them down in the last game. It is too close to call at the moment but CSK’s overall experience and ability to bounce back makes them favorites here.
