The final match of the Group D stage in the Vijay Hazare Trophy couldn’t have been scripted any better. Table-toppers Delhi and Haryana are set to face off in a high-stakes clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 8th January, starting at 9:00 AM. The winner of this contest will finish the group stage at the top of the points table, while the losing side could find itself in a vulnerable position — especially with Saurashtra still in contention to qualify for the quarterfinals if they secure a win in their fixture.
Delhi have won five of their six matches so far, with their only defeat coming against Odisha. They have looked particularly comfortable while chasing. In their previous fixture, the Delhi bowlers bundled Railways out for 179, with Navdeep Saini and Ayush Badoni picking up three wickets apiece. The batters then made light work of the target, chasing it down in just 22 overs with six wickets in hand. Priyansh Arya led the way with a blazing 80 off 41 balls, ensuring Delhi maintained their position at the top of the Group D points table.
Haryana have registered four wins from their six matches so far, with one game ending in a tie. In their previous outing, they posted a strong total of 324 while batting first, courtesy of a superb 112 from Himanshu Rana, supported by half-centuries from Mayank Shandilya and Parth Vats. With the ball, Anshul Kamboj claimed three wickets and Samant Jakhar picked up two, but despite their efforts, Haryana were unable to prevent Andhra from pulling the game back to a tie via the VJD method.
In the 2023 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, both teams were placed in Group C, where Haryana secured a memorable win over Delhi. Batting first, Haryana posted 293 for 6, with Rahul Tewatia playing a brilliant unbeaten knock of 99. For Delhi, Harsh Tyagi and Navdeep Saini picked up two wickets each. In response, Himmat Singh’s fighting 80 went in vain as Anshul Kamboj and Harshal Patel claimed three wickets apiece to bowl Delhi out and seal Haryana’s first victory over them in five matches — a convincing 53-run win.

After capitalising on the early momentum created by Virat Kohli’s outstanding form — scoring 208 runs in the first two matches — Delhi have continued their winning run and maintained their dominance in Group D. Sarthak Ranjan and Priyansh Arya are expected to open the innings once again, having stitched together a 109-run stand in the previous game, where Arya top-scored with 80. Arya has been the standout performer with the bat this season, amassing 310 runs at a strike rate of 165.77 — the highest among Delhi’s batters — including four half-centuries. Ranjan, however, has struggled for runs and has managed only 38 runs in three innings so far. Nitish Rana will occupy the No. 3 position; he scored 38 in the last match and has a total of 198 runs from six games at a strike rate of 105.88.
Rishabh Pant will anchor the middle order alongside Harshit Rana and Ayush Badoni. Pant scored a brisk 24 off 9 balls, including three sixes, in the previous match and has accumulated 212 runs so far, with two half-centuries at a strike rate of 112.76. Badoni, however, has struggled with the bat, managing just 16 runs in four innings, though he has contributed with the ball by picking up four wickets at an impressive economy rate of 3.59. Harsh Tyagi may come into the XI in place of Rana, having scored 136 runs at an average of 45.33. Despite individual contributions, Delhi’s middle order remains an area of concern heading into this contest.
Prince Yadav will spearhead the bowling attack alongside Harshit Rana, Navdeep Saini, Ishant Sharma, and Harsh Tyagi. Yadav has been Delhi’s standout performer with the ball this season, leading the wicket charts with 13 wickets at an economy rate of 5.00, and he will once again be the bowler to watch out for. Saini has picked up seven wickets so far — including three in the previous match — while maintaining an economy of 5.19. Harshit Rana has impressed as well, claiming five wickets in just two matches, and will join the India squad after this fixture. Ishant Sharma has provided valuable control with four wickets from five games at a miserly economy of 3.46.

Mayank Shandilya will open the innings alongside Ankit Kumar. Shandilya scored 75 runs in the previous match and has accumulated 187 runs in four games at an average of 46, including two half-centuries. Kumar, meanwhile, has been one of Haryana’s most consistent performers, scoring 241 runs in six matches with a century to his name. Himanshu Rana will slot in at No. 3 and enters this contest in outstanding form. He notched up a century in the last game and has now amassed 368 runs in six innings, featuring two centuries and two half-centuries. His tally of 37 boundaries is the highest among Haryana’s batters this season.
Yashvardhan Dalal will anchor the middle order alongside Parth Vats, Samant Jakhar, and Rahul Tewatia. Dalal has scored 232 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 103, including a fine century. Vats has been Haryana’s standout performer with the bat, leading the run charts with 394 runs at an outstanding average of 98.50 and a strike rate of 106.48. His tally includes one century and three half-centuries, making him the key batter to watch out for. Jakhar has contributed 64 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 142.22, while also making an impact with the ball, picking up seven wickets at an economy rate of 7.29. Tewatia, however, has been the weak link in the middle order so far, managing just 66 runs across five innings.
Anshul Kamboj will spearhead the bowling attack alongside Anuj Thakral, Ajay Singh, Samant Jakhar, and Amit Rana. Kamboj has been outstanding this season, picking up 14 wickets in six matches at an economy rate of 5.28 — the best among Haryana’s bowlers — making him the key bowler to watch out for. Thakral has provided strong support at the other end, claiming nine wickets at an economy of 5.67.
