India A take on India D in the third match of the Duleep Trophy 2024 at Anantapur.
A loss in the opening encounter means both India A and India D will be aiming for a win to give themselves the best chance to finish higher going into the last round.
With several gun players leaving the competition to take part in the prep camp for the Bangladesh test series, India A are going to be without resources.
Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are big boots to fill and India A will have to find a way to put together a strong squad that can compete well with a relatively strong India D side who’ll believe they can make do without the services of their star all-rounder Axar Patel.

India A won the toss and chose to field first and their pace unit led by Akash Deep put India B under the pump straightaway. Their decision to bat second was justified, as the India A pace trio led by Akash Deep ran through their batting order.
India B were in a spot of bother, having lost 7 wickets with just 94 runs on the board. However, India A failed to wrap up the tail quickly, and they had to pay the price. Musheer Khan and Navdeep Saini combined for a 205-run partnership and snatched the advantage back from India A.
Trailing by 321, India A began well with Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal showing promise. But Gill departed for 25 and Mayank fell soon after for 36, and an opportunity to score big went begging. But Riyan Parag and KL Rahul steadied the ship and were looking good to score big before they were dismissed against the run of play.
The rest of the batting order couldn’t do much, except for Tanush Kotian who showed stiff resistance along with Shivam Dube. With their innings ending at 231, India A conceded a 90-run lead which proved to be decisive in the context of the match. Their pace trio brought them back in business with a superb performance, Akash Deep snaring a five-wicket haul. But 275 in bowling-friendly conditions on a deteriorating wicket was always going to be hard, and they never looked like they were on track losing half their side for 76 runs.
KL Rahul and Akash Deep played useful knocks to take them close to 200, but the fate of the game had been sealed a long time ago. With several players including star performers from the first match KL Rahul and Akash Deep leaving, India A have to quickly regroup and perform under a new captain, Mayank Agarwal.

India D, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, competed well in the first game but couldn’t quite produce the goods when it mattered. In what was a stiff contest at Anantapur, India D had their fair share of moments for a good part of the match.
After being put in to bat, India D’s start went from bad to worse in no time, as they lost 3 wickets in a space of 6 balls to be left reeling for 23/4 in just a tick over 6 overs. India C bowlers went all out on attack and never gave India B a sniff at recovering their innings. India D lost their next 4 wickets with just 55 runs added to their tally.
At 76 for 8, they were a chance to fold below 100 but Axar Patel thought otherwise and made 86 useful runs to take their score beyond 160. India D bowlers came up with a spirited effort and made India C work for each and every run. Harshit Rana in particular was on fire and ensured that they didn’t give away a big lead.
Axar and Saransh Jain supported him ably and chipped in with four wickets between them. India D’s second innings with the bat was better than the first, with Shreyas Iyer, Padikkal and Ricky Bhui contributing. The wicket opened up a bit and the ball started coming on nicely, but 236 runs on that wicket was never going to be enough to put pressure on the opposition, as India D bowlers found out.
India C batsmen made better use of the conditions and romped home to a 4-wicket victory, despite losing wickets at regular intervals. Saransh Jain added to his tally picking up 4 fourth innings wickets, but the rest of the bowling group was dealt with.

The wicket was hard to score runs on in the first two days but got better as play went on. If the pitch is going to behave the same way, batsmen will find it hard to play their shots early on. Tall pace bowlers who can bend their backs and give the ball a real rip enjoy the bounce on offer here. It’s one of the sporting wickets in the circuit where there’s good competition between bat and ball.
The match will be played at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh.
Electing to field first proved to be a great decision in the first match, and it’s likely to stay that way. The team winning toss will most likely choose to put the opposition in to bat if the wicket behaves in a similar manner.
India D played way better than India A in their opening match and are no aliens to the conditions here. In addition, their side looks settled despite Axar Patel leaving for national duty. India A will have to field a completely new look XI to the side that took the field in Bengaluru a week ago. Keeping all this in mind, we guess India D will dominate proceedings in this all-important match.
We are backing India D as winners of this contest.
