After an impressive win over the SA in the first T20I, India is set to play the second game of the series at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on 2nd October from 7 pm. A win against the visitors can give Rohit Sharma his 7th consecutive T20I series win as a captain. But he has a tough task to make it happen in absence of the lead bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

India opted to field first on the green pitch of the Thiruvananthapuram. The decision was proven right by the Indian pacers Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh by claiming 5 SA wickets in the first three overs of the game. A resistance from Aiden Markram (25) and Wayne Parnell (24) followed by classy innings from Keshav Maharaj (41) helped SA to set a target of 107 runs. Indian top order chased the target with 8 wickets and 20 balls in hand after half-centuries from KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav.

With the win, India now have 23 wins in one calendar year (most by any team). They haven’t lost the last 8 T20I series (7 wins, 1 draw). So it will be difficult for Temba Bavuma to keep their record of not losing a series on Indian soil. But who knows? He has the second-best win-loss record of all captains that have led SA at least 10 times.

India Preview

The 8-wicket win in the 1st T20I showed India’s combined efforts from the batting and bowling department. Chahar and Arshdeep’s swings, Ashwin’s economical bowling, Harshal Patel’s T20 experience followed by KL Rahul’s calculated knock, and most in-form Surya’s fiery inning. Rohit Sharma will expect this to continue in the remaining games and in Australia to win the ICC T20 WC. Rohit and Rahul will open the innings. Rahul has 249 runs in the last 9 games with 3 half-centuries. But his strike rate is below 120. Sharma shows a different picture at the top with 198 runs at a strike rate of more than 160. Surprisingly, both of them haven’t batted long together since KL Rahul’s return.

Virat Kohli has 1 century and 3 half centuries in his last 9 games. But he also has 3 single-digit figures in these games. Though the form is back, he is yet to match up with consistency. It is better to say less about Surya Kumar Yadav. The world number 2 T20I batter is the leading run-scorer of this year with the most number of sixes. He has 732 runs with 45 sixes at a strike rate of 180.29. In the absence of Hardik Pandya and Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant will both get these games as a preparation for World Cup.

India suffered a massive heartbreak after Jasprit Bumrah got ruled out from the rest of the series and the T20 World Cup. Looks like Deepak Chahar will continue with Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel. Chahar and Singh destroyed SA’s top and middle order in the first three overs of the first game. Singh took 3 wickets in his first over to rattle SA to 9 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Ashwin and Axar Patel will be the spin options after conceding just 3 runs per over collectively in the first game. Mohammad Siraj has been added as a replacement for Bumrah.

Key Players: Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Deepak Chahar.

South Africa Preview

It was a nightmare for SA. Losing 5 wickets for 9 runs is what not they expected. It was the third time they had lost 5 wickets in the powerplay. Hopefully, they come back stronger in the second T20I.  Quinton de Kock and Bavuma will open the innings for SA. De Kock’s 2 fifties in the last 5 T20Is against India will come in handy to go in the second game. But Bavuma has to find a solution for his low strike rate. Reeza Hendricks who was SA’s leading run scorer with 296 runs in 5 games against England and Ireland also got out on the duck in the first game. A bad game will not make his form stutter and is expected to bounce back against the inexperienced Indian bowling attack.

Aiden Markram and Wayne Parnell brought SA back into the game with a 33-run partnership. Markram has 747 runs in 24 games played so far at a strike rate of 150 and 8 half-centuries. No doubt he is the backbone of SA’s middle-order for quite a long.     Tristan Stubbs needs to work on playing more balls before going for big hits. He went for a zero in the first game on his first ball after playing a shot not required for the situation.

Bowling-wise, SA bowlers had a good game. Rabada and Parnell gave just 5 runs per over in 8 overs. It was the spin attack of Shamsi and Maharaj that got hammered by the Indian batters. This happened in the last series too. SA should go with Dwayne Pretorious over Tabrez Shamsi as he adds batting also in the mixture.

Key Players: Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Anrich Nortje

South Africa Predicted Playing XI:

Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Keshav Maharaj.

Weather Conditions

The weather will be mostly cloudy with thunderstorms predicted during the game.  The temperature will range between 26 and 35°C. The wind will be flowing from the west at 4-7 kmh. This will be the first game played at the venue after a gap of 5 years. The pitch favors bowling. Not a single time, the batting side has crossed 160 runs on this pitch.

Venue Details

The 2nd T20I between India and South Africa will be played atBarsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. The venue holds a capacity of 20000 spectators and has hosted 2 ODI & 5 T20Is so far.

Toss: To Bowl

In the 5 T20I, the results have favored both teams defending and chasing the target. Excluding the one abandoned game, both sides have won twice. Seeing the pitch behavior and the average first inning score, the team winning the toss should bowl first.

SA couldn’t even come closer to India at any part of the game in the first T20I. Though they are yet to lose a series on Indian soil and have won 5 out of 6 series on through while sharing the remaining one since the change in 2021, they are playing against the in-form Indian batters. If it comes to chasing India will always have an upper hand at home. Rohit Sharma is unbeaten in the last 6 T20I series as a captain. India has 23 wins (77%) this year. A win here will make them hold their record of defending the 12th T20I series at home.

We predict that India will defeat South Africa.
