After a week, the Vitality T20 Blast is returning to action with the knockout games for this season. In the first semi-final, Lancashire will host Somerset at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on 13th September, from 7 pm onwards. Somerset were the finalists of the last T20 Blast season. Lancashire topped the North Group with 9 wins in 14 games, while Somerset finished second in the South group with 11 wins.
In the quarters, Lancashire Lightning stormed into Finals Day with a three-wicket win over Kent Spitfires at Old Trafford, keeping alive hopes of a second Vitality Blast crown 10 years after their first. Luke Wood set the tone by striking with the very first ball and finishing with 3 for 29, while Liam Livingstone starred with both bat and ball. Livingstone’s 2 for 21 helped peg Kent to 153, before his explosive unbeaten 85 off 45 balls, featuring seven sixes, powered Lancashire’s chase. Despite a shaky start at 5 for 2 and Nathan Klaassen’s superb 3 for 14, the hosts regained control in front of over 12,000 fans. Contributions from Michael Jones and others gave support, but it was Livingstone’s brilliance that sealed victory with nine balls to spare.
Somerset booked their place at Finals Day with a thrilling four-wicket win over Birmingham Bears at Taunton, sealed by Sean Dickson’s breathtaking 71 off just 26 balls. Chasing 191, Somerset looked under pressure despite Tom Abell’s steady 51 and Oliver Hannon-Dalby’s incisive 3 for 24 for the visitors. Somerset’s chase stumbled at times, slipping to 64 for 2 and later needing 19 off the last over. Dickson’s explosive finish—five fours and six sixes, including two maximums and a four in the final over—snatched victory with a ball to spare, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Back in 2021, both teams played against each other for the last time. A masterful unbeaten 78 from Tom Abell helped Somerset win the game by 7 wickets to reach the semis. Will Smeed’s 44 also played a key role, though Lancashire will rue missed chances and a contentious LBW appeal against Abell that ball-tracking later showed was out. Earlier, Liam Livingstone threatened to take the game away with a blistering 25 off 9, but Roelof van der Merwe dismissed him and ran through the middle order with four wickets. Lancashire’s depleted lineup, missing key names through injury and international duty, still managed 180+, but a slow finish left them short.

Lancashire will miss Phil Salt and Luke Wood as the duo are currently picked up for the national duty. Matthew Hurst will take the place of Salt. He might open the innings with Keaton Jennings. Hurst has 203 runs in 9 games at a strike rate of 131. Jennings is their leading run-scorer with 415 runs at a strike rate of 152.57. Luke Wells will come in at number three. Wells has 306 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 152. He has also picked up 4 wickets at an economy of just over 8.
Liam Livingstone will come in the middle with Ashton Turner and Michael Jones. In 6 games of the season, Livingstone has scored 231 runs at an average of 57.75 and a strike rate of 181. He has hit 19 sixes - the most among the Lancashire batters. He will be the batter to watch out for. He has picked up 6 wickets with the ball at an average of 13.83 - the lowest among all. Turner has 240 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 127. With 192 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 125, Jones is the weakest link in Lancashire’s batting lineup.
With the leading wicket-taker of Lancashire, Luke Wood, not available for the semi-final, Sir James Anderson will lead the bowling attack with Thomas Aspinwall, Jack Blatherwick, and Tom Hartley. Anderson has 18 wickets in 10 games at an economy of 7.78 - the lowest among the bowlers. Aspinwall has taken 10 wickets at an economy of 7.92. Blatherwick has claimed 13 wickets in 13 games at an economy of 9.3. With Luke Wood (22) and Chris Green (21) not available for the selection, Somerset’s bowling unit looks very ordinary.
Key Players: Liam Livingstone, Keaton Jennings, Sir James Anderson
Luke Wells didn't get going in the last game and was dismissed for just 1 run in 5 balls. He is a really good ball-striker and has hit a total of 21 sixes this season in 15 matches, averaging 1.4 sixes per match. At Edgbaston, he is averaging one six per match, and we back him to step up in this fixture against Somerset and deposit at least one maximum into the stands.
Liam Livingstone played a match-winning knock of 85 runs from 45 balls against Kent in the quarterfinal clash. He is in really good form this season, where he has scored close to 300 runs in the Blast. He will be looking to extend his form in the semifinals against Somerset, and we back Livingstone to play another match-winning knock and score over 24 runs in this fixture.

With 4 wins in the last 5 games, Somerset will repeat the playing eleven from the quarter-final. Will Smeed will open the innings with Tom Kohler-Cadmore. The duo are the most destructive opening batters in this tournament. Smeed is the third leading run-scorer of the Blast with 521 runs at a strike rate of 142.73. He will be the batter to watch out for. On the other hand, Kohler-Cadmore has 453 runs in the same games at a strike rate of 170. He has hit 22 sixes - the highest among the Somerset batters.
Tom Abell will come in at number three. Abell was the player of the match in the quarter finals of Blast 2021, where Somerset won the game by 7 wickets. He scored a half-century in the quarter-final against Warwickshire. This season, he has scored 291 runs at a strike rate of 125. James Rew will come in the middle with Sean Dickson and Lewis Gregory. Dickson has scored 362 runs at a strike rate of 165 in 12 innings with four half-centuries. In the last game, Dickson scored an unbeaten knock of 71 runs in 26 deliveries. Gregory is the perfect all-rounder for Somerset in the number six position. Gregory has scored 260 runs and has picked up with the bat at a strike rate of 171 - the highest among the batters, and has picked up 12 wickets at a strike rate of 9.52 - the highest among all.
Riley Meredith will lead the bowling attack with Ben Green, Jake Ball, and Lewis Goldsworthy. Meredith is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament with 28 wickets at an economy of 8.62. He will be the bowler to watch out for. Ben Green has 18 wickets in 15 games at an economy of 9.21. With 11 wickets at a strike rate of below 8, Goldsworthy provides a stable option for bowling. Overton has picked up 8 wickets with an economy of 7.44 - the slowest among the current players.
Key Players: Will Smeed, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Riley Meredith.
Tom Abell played a match-winning knock of 51 runs from 31 balls, smashing five fours and one six in a last-over finish against the Birmingham Bears in the quarterfinals. Abell has scored 291 runs in 14 matches, averaging 29. He has a good record at Edgbaston, where he has scored 221 runs in 9 matches, averaging 25. Given his current run of form, we back Abell to score over 22 runs in this fixture.

We back Somerset to win the coin toss in the 1st Semi Final match of the Vitality T20 Blast 2025 season against Lancashire at Edgbaston.
This season, 8 games have already been played on this ground. Out of 8, the teams defending the target have won the game on 5 occasions. The team winning the toss should bowl first.
Somerset’s batting lineup is far above the Lancashire unit. The Somerset openers have scored 974 runs in 15 games of this season with 6 fifties and 40 sixes. Abell knows how to play against the familiar rivals. Though Livingstone had scored 25 off 10 in the last game Lancashire played against Somerset, this time he is almost carrying the ride solo.
We predict that Somerset will win against Lancashire.
