The Women’s ODI tri-series is all set to kick off at the Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd in Utrecht. The hosts will face Papua New Guinea in the opening match.

Netherlands Women haven’t played a one-day game since July 2023 but they recently hosted Hong Kong Women for a 4-match T20I series and won 4-0.

Papua New Guinea Women toured Zimbabwe in March of this year for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. They lost 5 of these matches while one T20I game ended in a tie and the PNG Women won the super-over.

Soon after that tour, PNG Women competed in a tri-series in Dubai where they beat the USA by 6 wickets and lost to Scotland by a huge margin of 104 runs.

As they come to the Netherlands for another tri-series they will be up for a tough challenge. The hosts pack a strong bowling attack that has delivered match-winning spells in recent matches.

Netherlands Women Preview

Babette de Leede has taken over the captaincy of the women’s team of the Netherlands in the ODIs. The last time the Netherlands played a one-day international, Heather Siegers was the captain.

She is not part of the squad this time around and the hosts will need another batter to fill her spot in the middle order. We reckon bowling all-rounder Robine Rijke can be the right contender to feature at number 4.

Iris Zwilling and Phebe Molkenboer are the most likely candidates to open the innings for the home team. Rijke will be the key player to watch out for in the middle order given her approach to batting. The openers and the skipper at number 3 are all quite conservative in the way they approach their batting.

However, Rijke, even when everyone else is batting cautiously at a strike rate that’s hardly around 100, goes berzerk with her big-hitting and scores at a much faster rate.

Zwilling has opened the innings in T20Is but was a middle-order batter in their last ODI series against Thailand. Considering the number of all-rounders the Netherlands are packing in the squad, we reckon it will be a deep batting lineup.

Frederique Overdijk, Zwilling, and Silver Siegers will be the key wicket-taking bowlers to watch out for in this squad. They’ve been quite consistent in the recent T20Is and can put the visitors on the back foot in this match.

Netherlands Women Predicted Playing XI:

Iris Zwilling, Phebe Molkenboer, Babette de Leede (c & wk), Robine Rijke, Sanya Khurana, Carlijn van Koolwijk, Frederique Overdijk, Caroline de Lange, Merel Dekeling, Hannah Landheer, Silver Siegers

Netherlands Women Actual Playing XI:

Phebe Molkenboer, Iris Zwilling, Annemijn Thomson, Eva Lynch, Robine Rijke, Babette De Leede, Annemijn Van Beuge, Caroline de Lange, Frederique Overdijk, Hannah Landheer, Silver Siegers

Papua New Guinea Women Preview

PNG Women will be hoping to bounce back after their recent losses. They’ve suffered constant losses in recent matches and this game could be an uphill battle for the visitors.

Their last win came against the USA where they chased down a 161-run target at the ICC Cricket Ground in Dubai. In the very next game against Scotland, Papua New Guinea Women were bowled out for 113 runs while chasing a small target of 218.

And on their tour of Zimbabwe, PNG Women could not reach the 200-run mark even once in the 3-match ODI series. Naoani Vere and skipper Brenda Tau open the innings for PNG.

These two are the most crucial players for the visitors. While these two haven’t been in great form, the likes of Tanya Ruma and Shibona Jimmy in the middle order made some impactful contributions in recent outings.

Ruma scored an unbeaten 80 at number 3 in their successful run chase over the USA while Shibona Jimmy scored 57 off 91 balls in a losing cause against Zimbabwe while chasing 185 runs.

In the same ODI series, skipper Tau had scored 72 runs at the top but at a very slow rate and PNG finished under 200 runs in that game. Overall, it is evident that only a few batters in this side can score big but even then, they may not lead PNG Women to a big total.

Pauke Siaka, Shibona Jimmy, and Dika Lohia are among the key wicket-takers in this side. They’ve got a great variety in the bowling and someone or the other has always stepped up to the occasion and delivered breakthroughs for the side.

Papua New Guinea Women Predicted Playing XI:

Brenda Tau (c & wk), Dika Lohia, Henao Thomas, Isabel Toua, Kevau Frank, Melanie Ani, Naoani Vare, Pauke Siaka, Sibona Jimmy, Tanya Ruma, Vicky Araa

Papua New Guinea Women Actual Playing XI:

Brenda Tau, Kevau Frank, Pauke Siaka, Tanya Ruma, Naoani Vare, Sibona Lucy Jimmy, Henao Thomas, Vicky Araa, Isabel Toua, Buruka Vicky , Geua Tom

Weather Conditions

The weather will be mostly sunny on the match day with a few clouds likely to come in during the match. There will be no rain to interrupt the match or even to help the swing bowlers.

NEDW vs PNG-W Pitch Report

The average 1st innings score here in the last 10 T20Is is 127 runs. The Women’s ODIs, however, were pretty high-scoring with the average 1st innings score being 299 runs from 2 matches. Nevertheless, we reckon there is enough help for the bowlers to trouble the batters and a score of 250+ in the 1st innings should be very competitive.

Toss: To Bat

There have been only two Women’s ODIs at this venue and the team batting first won both. Since this is the first match of the tri-series, we reckon the pitch would be new and fresh and teams will be looking to bat first and get as many runs as they can on the board.

Netherlands Women are playing an ODI after a long gap but should be confident given their recent record at home in T20Is. They’ve got a solid overall squad with a bowling attack that will pose a threat to the struggling PNG batting lineup. PNG haven’t got many reliable batters and the ones making consistent contributions struggle with their strike rates. Netherlands Women will start as favorites in our match prediction.
