The final round of matches in the County Championship Division Two 2024 promised to deliver some intense battle even if Northamptonshire and Derbyshire do not have a big reason to go for victories. Both teams are struggling at the foot of Division Two. Northamptonshire do have the potential to jump ahead of Gloucestershire, who are eight points ahead with three games left to play. Derbyshire, meanwhile, have only picked up one victory all season long and they have struggled with 104 points on board.

The County Ground in Northampton will be the destination for this game as it hosts Northampton for the first time since early July.

Northamptonshire Preview

Northamptonshire were able to overcome consecutive losses against Sussex and Middlesex to pick up a draw against Gloucestershire in the last match. The team managed a healthy 11 points from the game which was abandoned due to rain. Emilio Gay continues to lead the charge for Northants with 919 runs from his 17 innings – including two centuries.

Luke Procter has been the other top batsman for Northamptonshire so far in the campaign. He has managed 778 runs from his 17 innings at an average of 51. The match being called off early against Gloucs did not provide any meaningful opportunity for the captain to add to his tally for the campaign.

Justin Broad had an amazing day against Gloucs in the last match after grabbing 7/33 from his 15 overs. This was the first six-wicket haul for the 24-year-old in first-class cricket. They have helped him move up to 16 wickets from his 11 innings. Sanderson still leads the charts for Northants with 37 wickets from 15 innings. Sanderson was recently involved in the T20 action against Somerset where he picked up one wicket.

Northamptonshire Predicted Playing XI:

Prithvi Shaw, Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter (c), George Bartlett, Rob Keogh, James Sales, Lewis McManus, Justin Broad, Gus Miller, Dominic Leech, Yuzvendra Chahal

Derbyshire Preview

Derbyshire could not build on the win against Glamorgan after suffering a heavy loss against Sussex in the last match. After being set a daunting 607 target from the first innings by Sussex, Derby had very little opportunity to get back into the game despite a brilliant century from Wayne Madsen. Still, there were several positives that the team could take from the innings and 59-run defeat.

Derby are only playing for pride in the remaining few matches. Last season, the team finished sixth in the standings even without any victories. As it stands, the team may be on course to overcome their 113-point tally from last season.

Zak Chappell finished with figures of 2/100 in the loss against Sussex. He remains the top wicket-taker for Derby in the campaign with 25 from 13 innings at an average of 31.3. If not for Madsen, Derby could have suffered an even bigger loss against Sussex. He is the top scorer for Derbyshire this season with 753 runs from the 18 innings. After having just scored his second century of the season, Madsen will be pumped up for the match against Northants.

Derbyshire Predicted Playing XI:

Harry Came, Luis Reece, Brooke Guest, Wayne Madsen, David Lloyd (c), Aneurin Donald, Anuj Dal, Zak Chappell, Jack Morley, Daryn Dupavillon, Pat Brown

Weather Conditions

The average first innings score for the home and away teams on the County Ground in Northampton stands at 407 and 398 respectively. The average score for these teams drops down to 301 and 224 respectively in the second innings. The weather conditions in Northampton on Monday are expected to be partly cloudy with maximum temperatures hitting 17°C.

NOR vs DER Pitch Report

The County Ground in Northampton has played host to 5 matches so far in the 2024 campaign. Northampton have been unable to win any of these games while away teams have picked up two wins. The County Ground tends to favour batsmen while the potential for rain on the second day of the game can make things interesting.

Toss: To Bat

The toss has been unable to have a significant bearing on the result. Northampton have won the toss in three of the last four matches at home. They have been unable to turn these into a positive result on any of the four occasions. The away team has only one toss-winning opportunity at the County ground in Northampton with the game finishing as a draw.

Northamptonshire and Derbyshire are only playing for pride in the last few games of the season. After having failed to pick up any wins in the last five games, Northamptonshire will be keen to take advantage of the penultimate home match. Derbyshire, though, might be good enough for a draw.
