Match 23 of the 2026 Ford Trophy sees Otago Volts take on Canterbury Kings at Invercargill. Otago's campaign has been disastrous so far - they're bottom of the table with only two points from seven outings. Canterbury, on the other hand, sit top of the pile with 28 points from the same number of matches. Looking at how both sides have performed, Canterbury should win this comfortably.

Otago Volts are having an absolute shocker in this Ford Trophy. They're dead last with only two points from seven games, and that came from a washout. Six losses on the trot, including that 56-run hammering by Wellington last time out, and they'll need something special to turn this disaster around.
Everything's gone wrong. The batting's been all over the place, and the bowling attack hasn't troubled anyone.
Max Chu is about the only one who's delivered, putting together 235 runs across six innings at 39.16, striking at 71.42.
Luke Georgeson and Jack Boyle have contributed over 130 runs apiece, but both keep getting out after getting in. Georgeson made a fighting 52 off 64 balls against Wellington in their last match, but he's been hot and cold. Otago need him firing on all cylinders if they want to finish this campaign with any dignity.
The bowling's been led by Matthew Bacon, who's taken 11 wickets at an average of 27. Jarrod McKay and Ben Lockrose have combined for 19 scalps and must perform again if there's any chance of containing Canterbury.

Canterbury Kings have been dominant this season, winning six of seven games to sit atop the ladder. In their most recent outing, they demolished Northern Brave by eight wickets after restricting them to 158. That win has practically sealed their spot in the final, barring a collapse in their remaining three matches.
The batters have fired right from the opening game. Skipper Henry Nicholls has been in phenomenal form, piling on 428 runs across seven matches at an average of 71.33 and a strike rate of 97. He's notched three centuries already and should be good for at least 30-40 runs in this game.
Tom Latham has been exceptional as well, racking up 411 runs from only five innings at an average of 137. He's scored back-to-back hundreds and will be eager to maintain that red-hot form. Rhys Mariu has contributed 221 runs in six outings, averaging 55.25 and striking at 80 to maintain the scoring rate.
On the bowling front, Fraser Sheat has been reliable under pressure, taking 11 wickets at an average of 25.63. Michael Rae has 10 scalps while Cole McConchie has picked up six, giving them a balanced bowling lineup.

The weather in Invercargill will be cloudy throughout the day, with a couple of afternoon showers that could disrupt the game. A pleasant wind blowing across the stadium will help seamers get movement off the pitch.
There has been only one men's T20 match played at Queen's Park – back in 2018, when Central Stags posted 217-9 after batting first against Otago and won by 118 runs. That match was eight years ago, so the pitch’s characteristics might have changed. However, we can still expect a typical New Zealand wicket, with something for the seamers while being pretty good for batting.
With cloudy and overcast conditions likely in Invercargill, expect the toss-winning skipper to bowl first here to give the bowlers a fair chance of getting early wickets.
Otago Volts have only three games left to turn their season around, and they'll need to completely rethink how they're playing. That's easier said than done, especially given who they're up against. Canterbury Kings are next on the schedule—a team sitting at the top of the table who've beaten Otago in each of their last four meetings. Canterbury haven't lost in their last five outings, while Otago haven't managed a single victory so far this season. Given how things have been going recently, Canterbury should feel confident about adding another win to their tally.
