The Vijay Hazare Trophy has reached its mid-phase, with Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka asserting strong control in Group A, remaining unbeaten across four matches. In contrast, teams like Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu have struggled to find consistency and build momentum. Rajasthan are set to host Tamil Nadu at the Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ Ground in Motera, Ahmedabad, on 3 January, with the match scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM IST. Tamil Nadu currently sits sixth on the points table with four points, while Rajasthan are yet to open its account.
Rajasthan have endured a nightmare campaign so far, having lost all four of their matches — three while chasing and one while defending a total. In their previous outing against Kerala, Rajasthan posted a formidable 343 for 7, with Karan Lamba leading the charge with a brilliant 119 that included six fours and four sixes. However, their bowlers were unable to capitalise on the strong total, as Kerala successfully chased down the target off the final delivery of the match to seal a two-wicket win, despite a four-wicket effort from Aniket Choudhary.
Tamil Nadu began their campaign on a commanding note with a comprehensive win over Puducherry, but their momentum has since faded, slipping to three consecutive defeats. In their most recent fixture against Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu posted 244 while batting first, with Pradosh Ranjan Paul contributing a valuable 49. However, their bowling attack failed to make inroads, as Jharkhand cruised to a nine-wicket victory, with Paul claiming the only wicket to his name.
Both teams last met in the Preliminary Quarterfinal of the previous season. Varun Chakravarthy starred with a five-wicket haul, restricting Rajasthan to 267 despite a brilliant 111 from Abhijeet Tomar. However, Tamil Nadu faltered in the chase and were bowled out for 248, falling 19 runs short of the target. Aman Shekhawat (3 wickets), Aniket Choudhary (2 wickets), and Kukna Ajay Singh (2 wickets) played key roles with the ball as Rajasthan secured a memorable victory — their first win over Tamil Nadu in the last five encounters.

Manender Narender Singh and Sumit Godara are expected to open the innings for Rajasthan. Singh has scored 77 runs in three matches, while Godara has managed 43 runs from two outings. However, the pair’s strike rates — both below 90 — could prove to be a concern against Tamil Nadu’s disciplined attack. Karan Lamba will slot in at number three and has been Rajasthan’s standout performer this season, amassing 306 runs in four games, including a century and a half-century. He will be the key batter to watch out for.
Deepak Hooda will strengthen the middle order alongside Mahipal Lomror and Mukul Choudhary. Hooda was impressive in the previous match, scoring 86 to take his season tally to 137 runs at a strike rate of 102.23 — making him the only batter in the Rajasthan lineup with a strike rate above 100 this season. Lomror, meanwhile, has managed 47 runs in four games so far, but his experience remains invaluable in the middle order, having accumulated 310 runs across his last nine List-A appearances.
Aniket Choudhary will spearhead the bowling attack alongside skipper Manav Suthar and Ashok Sharma. Choudhary was outstanding in the previous match, claiming four wickets to take his tournament tally to eight at an economy rate of 6.52. Suthar has also been consistent, picking up five wickets at an economy of 5.21, while Sharma has matched him with five wickets across four games. Rajasthan notably missed the services of Khaleel Ahmed in the last fixture; he had been one of their most effective bowlers earlier in the campaign, taking six wickets in the first three matches at an impressive economy of 4.77 — the best among their attack so far.
Key Players: Karan Lamba, Aniket Choudhary, Deepak Hooda.

Athish SR is expected to open the innings alongside N Jagadeesan. Athish has scored 37 runs from two matches so far, while Jagadeesan has been in excellent touch, amassing 187 runs in four outings with three half-centuries, and remains a key batter to watch. Tamil Nadu will also be eager to see whether Sai Sudharsan returns to the XI after missing the last two games, having scored 99 runs in his first two appearances of the season. Pradosh Ranjan Paul will slot in at number three and has been their leading run-getter so far, scoring 193 runs with two half-centuries.
Baba Indrajith will anchor the middle order alongside Boopathi Kumar, Mohamed Ali, and Sunny Sandhu. Indrajith has scored 122 runs in four matches so far, including a crucial 49 in the previous game. Kumar, however, is yet to make a significant impact this season, managing only 20 runs in two innings. Mohamed Ali has contributed well in the lower middle order, scoring 114 runs in three games at a strike rate of 102.70. Sandhu has been the most explosive of the lot, adding 104 runs in four matches at a blistering strike rate of 157.57 — the highest among the Tamil Nadu batters this season.
Gurjapneet Singh will lead the bowling attack alongside Govinth G, Sonu Yadav, and R Sai Kishore. Singh has been Tamil Nadu’s standout performer with the ball so far, picking up seven wickets at an economy rate of 5.15, and will once again be the bowler to watch. Govinth and Sonu have provided strong support, claiming five wickets each. Although Sai Kishore has managed only three wickets this season, he has been exceptionally economical, maintaining the lowest economy rate in the attack at 4.76.

The weather in Ahmedabad is expected to be sunny on match day, with temperatures ranging from 16 to 29 degrees Celsius. Winds will blow from the southeast at 6-10 km/h. It is a balanced pitch. The ADSA Railways Cricket Ground in Ahmedabad is a prominent venue for domestic and local cricket. Located in the heart of the city, the ground is known for its well-maintained pitch, which offers a fair contest between bat and ball. The venue is equipped with good facilities for players and provides comfortable seating for spectators, creating a vibrant atmosphere during matches. Its accessibility and reliable infrastructure make it a preferred choice for hosting competitive domestic fixtures and practice games in Ahmedabad.
The game will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium ‘B’ Ground in Motera, Ahmedabad, on 3 January, with the match scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM IST. The stadium has a capacity of 132000 spectators. The stadium has hosted 37 ODI games.
In the 37 games played here this season, teams defending the target have won the games on 20 occasions. The team winning the toss should bat first. The average first innings score is 240.
With both teams struggling to find consistency this season, this contest promises to be an intriguing battle. Tamil Nadu appear the more balanced side on paper, particularly with their stronger batting unit — and if Sai Sudharsan returns to the XI, Rajasthan’s search for their first win could become even more challenging. Recent history is also in Tamil Nadu’s favour, with four wins in their last five meetings against Rajasthan.
We predict that Tamil Nadu will win against Rajasthan.
