Rajasthan Royals face up against Punjab Kings in a must-win encounter that could make or break their hopes of advancing to the playoffs as one of the top two teams.
Placed second on the table, Royals have not been able to quite seal their place yet for the playoffs. Having cruised to 16 points first, they were in pole position to qualify, but they have gone down thrice in a row- against SRH, DC and CSK. And, it has sort of taken the wind out of their sails.
Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are already out of contention for the playoffs race. Their 60-run drubbing against RCB at Dharamshala ended their campaign but they’ll be hoping to finish this season with a couple of wins and see if they can avoid the wooden spoon somehow.

Rajasthan Royals were flying high with 8 wins and 1 loss from 9 matches. Their imperious form led many of us to think that their narrow 1-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad was just a blip in the radar and they’ll get back to winning ways sooner than later. But, suddenly, after a couple of losses to DC and CSK, Rajasthan Royals find themselves in a spot of bother. They’re so near yet so far to qualifying.
A win in one of the two matches will confirm their berth for the playoffs, but they’ll be eyeing two wins in two games to make sure they qualify as one of the top two teams. With Jos Buttler leaving for his national duty, they need to find someone to fill in for the English captain.
The batting group struggled against CSK on a slightly tricky pitch under sweltering heat, but otherwise they have been in good nick despite not being able to wrap up the chase. Their bowling performance against CSK was way better with the bowlers making good use of the conditions to push the defending champs hard. Remember, they had conceded two 200+ scores in the previous matches and were under fire.

Another season is nearing its completion and Punjab Kings has failed to qualify for the knockouts. With 4 wins and 8 losses from 12 games, their tournament is over.
But the least they could do now is play for pride in the matches to come and see if they can spoil the party for the other teams in contention. Two of those eight losses were narrow, particularly the 2-run defeat to SRH and a 9-run defeat to MI.
The results of these matches could have gone in Punjab Kings’ favour had they showed better resolve and composure to close out the game. None of their current stars or emerging players could demonstrate their prowess consistently with the ball in hand.
However, from a batting perspective, a couple of newbies namely Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma have turned out to be the finds of the tournament, as far as Punjab Kings are concerned. Both batsmen were instrumental in helping their team get to a winning position from incredibly tough situations, and will continue to play a big role with the franchise going forward.

Since it’s a fairly new venue, there isn’t much data on how the pitch behaves in general. If the two matches completed here last season are any indication, the pitch, with three 190+ scores, is generally good to bat on. The ball nips around under lights, and being a bit watchful early on will help lay down a solid platform for the chase. The weather forecast is not looking that great, with a strong thunderstorm a likely chance as the night wears on.

Average TurnBarsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati will be hosting this match. This is the third IPL fixture to be held at this venue. Last season, Punjab Kings held off Rajasthan Royals for a narrow 5-run win in the first match here, but the hosts bounced back in the second with a massive 57-run win over Delhi Capitals.
Teams batting first have won both the games held here so far, and the odds are high for the team winning the toss tomorrow to have a bat first and capitalize on the fresh wicket.
Rajasthan Royals should find Punjab Kings a relatively easier challenge to contend with. On paper and on the field, Royals look a far better side than Kings at the moment, and they should come away with a win.
We are backing Rajasthan Royals as the winners of this contest.
