The day has finally come where one of the biggest leagues ever to be played in the European region, the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League 2026 season, gets underway with the Rotterdam Dockers taking on the Amsterdam Flames in the 1st match on Wednesday, August 26, at Sportpark Duivesteijn, Voorburg in the Netherlands.

The Rotterdam Dockers are the second-least favourites to win this tournament as per their squad composition, and basically, they enter the tournament as the ultimate underdogs, while the Amsterdam Flames are the number one pick and favourites to win the tournament. But anything can happen, as we have seen in the past how teams that are underrated can lift the title.

Rotterdam Dockers Preview

The Rotterdam Dockers are led by one of the best captains in franchise cricket around the world, Faf du Plessis. Having scored 12,333 runs in 440 T20s, he is still in the best of form, having recently scored 292 runs in 9 matches for the Texas Super Kings.

In their batting lineup, they have the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, who won the title for the Manchester Super Giants in the Men's Hundred, where he scored 177 runs in 8 innings; overall, in T20s, he has scored 6,987 runs in 301 matches.

From the local pool of players, they have the likes of Vikramjit Singh and Michael Levitt, two of the most aggressive batters in the Dutch side. Aneurin Donald, who scored 137 runs in 5 matches in The Hundred, is going to be one of the key batters for the Dockers side.

In the middle order, they have veteran all-rounders in Shubham Ranjane, David Wiese, Roelof van der Merwe (342 wickets & 3215 runs in 373 T20's), and Ben Manenti, all of whom can clear the ropes with ease. Saqib Zulfiqar and Ryan Klein are also very good with the bat down the order, and both know the conditions at Voorburg really well.

Anrich Nortje (213 wickets in 171 T20's) will lead the pace attack alongside Logan van Beek and rising left-arm seamer Jai Moondra, who rattled the Indian batters a couple of months back. They also have Sandeep Lamichhane, who will be available for a couple of matches. Overall, the Dockers have veteran international experience alongside the best domestic players—a side that can challenge and get over the line if they fire collectively.

Amsterdam Flames Preview

The Amsterdam Flames are co-owned by former Australian legend Steve Waugh, who has constructed the squad the Australian way by bringing in the experience of Steve Smith—who is likely to lead the side—alongside former Indian international Ajinkya Rahane, providing two of the best cricketing brains to head the team.

Smith has been at his absolute best of late in T20 cricket; he scored 399 runs in 13 matches in the recently concluded MLC, bringing his overall career tally to 7,021 runs in 296 T20 matches. His strike rate has also surged well over 150 in 2026. He will open the innings alongside Rahane, who scored 335 runs in 14 matches in IPL 2026.

Max O'Dowd, Scott Edwards, Bas de Leede, and Curtis Campher—four of the best players in Associate cricket—form the core of the middle order. Adding to that, they possess the firepower of Michael Bracewell and Tim David (6,614 runs in 334 T20s). Three out of the five middle-order players can also contribute with the ball, extending their batting depth down to number eight.

In the bowling department, Gloucestershire's David Payne (306 wickets in 235 T20 matches) will lead the attack with his left-arm pace. He will partner with Richard Gleeson, whose raw pace can rattle opposition batters. Kyle Klein and Ali Hasan serve as the other two pace options.

In the spin department, local talent Aryan Dutt (30 wickets) joins Tim Pringle, who provides left-arm orthodox spin. The Flames' bowling unit has versatility written all over it and will prove difficult for opposing teams to get away.

Amsterdam Flames Predicted Playing XI:

Yuvraj Samra, Steve Smith (C), Ajinkya Rahane, Scott Edwards (wk), Bas de Leede, Curtis Campher, Michael Bracewell, Tim David, David Payne, Richard Gleeson, Aryan Dutt

Amsterdam Flames Actual Playing XI:

Max O'Dowd, Tim David, Yuvraj Samra, Bas de Leede, Michael Bracewell, Curtis Campher, Tim Pringle, Scott Edwards, David Payne, Kyle Klein, Richard Gleeson

RTD vs AMF Pitch Report

The pitch at Sportpark Duivesteijn offers a balanced track that favours both the batters and bowlers, the average 1st innings score at this venue in the last 10 T20 matches is around 150-160 runs. It is not a straight forward wicket where the batters can hit through the line, while expect some unevenness, where not much bounce is expected and spinners will come into play.

Toss: To Bowl

Teams bowling first hold the edge at Sportpark Duivesteijn, where the chasing side has won seven of the last 10 T20 matches in domestic cricket. It is a favorable chasing ground, as the surface gets better for batting as the match progresses, meaning the team that wins the toss will likely look to bowl first.

Toss Prediction: Rotterdam Dockers to win the coin toss

The odds are slightly in favour of the Rotterdam Dockers to win this match. They possess a much more experienced batting and bowling lineup than the Amsterdam Flames, and we back the Rotterdam Dockers to get over the line in what is expected to be a close contest in the first match of the European T20 League.
