The ICC Men's T20 World Cup Warm-up Matches are now underway. Scotland will clash with the United Arab Emirates at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday. Both teams have played one warm-up match already and this will be their final chance to fine-tune their lineups before the tournament officially begins.
Scotland has been in great T20 form in recent years. They have won all their last 5 matches, including their first warm-up fixture against the Netherlands. After opting to bat first at the Junction Oval, Scotland posted 151-7 on the board and then restricted the opposition to 133-7. Skipper Richie Berrington led from the front on a tough wicket with a solid knock of 41 off 29 balls. All-rounder Michael Leask’s 37 off 21 balls towards the end gave the team the much-needed push.
Scotland will be expecting some runs from the experienced opener George Munsey who averages 27.44 in the format with a strike rate of 144.73 after 52 games. Calum MacLeod is another one to watch out for.
Brad Wheal looked good in the warm-up against the Netherlands where he picked up 2-24 off 4 overs. Josh Davey is also expected to do well at the start with him. Left-arm spinner Mark Watt and off-spinner Leask will have the responsibility of manning the middle overs.

Although the United Arab Emirates lost their first warm-up fixture against the West Indies, they wouldn’t be too disappointed. After choosing to bowl first, they restricted the Windies to 152-9 with some tight bowling. Junaid Siddique was the star performer, taking 5-13 in his 4 overs. Medium pacer Zahoor Khan (2-24 off 4 overs) also impressed. However, their spinners Aayan Afzal Khan (0-32 off 3 overs) and Karthik Meiyappan (0-25 off 2 overs) were both quite expensive. They would need to acclimatize themselves to the conditions quickly.
Where UAE faltered was their batting. Only opener Muhammad Waseem held the fort during the chase with an unbeaten knock of 69 off 52 balls while the others around him kept falling. This practice match offers another opportunity for opener Chirag Suri, Vriitya Aravind, and captain Chundangapoyil Rizwan to get some runs under their belt.

The pitch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground is known to offer some help to seam bowlers. They will get some bounce and movement off the pitch, particularly at the start. It should stay true through the match. Spinners will have to bow tight lines.
A few spells of heavy rains are expected in Melbourne on the day of the match and we might not get a complete game.
The average score batting first at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in T20Is is only 141. The highest total at the venue is 184-3 by India. The team batting first in the match will look to set a target of around 160-170 runs.
Batting second generally yields better results here and since rain is expected, the team winning the toss is likely to field first.
There’s only been one T20I played between Scotland and the United Arab Emirates – back in 2019, which UAE won by 37 runs. However, Scotland have become a much-improved side now and these conditions will suit them better. They have a strong batting unit and their seam bowlers should be able to trouble the UAE batters. If the UAE spinners don’t get things right again, the team might struggle again.
Back Scotland to emerge victorious in this encounter.
