It's time to roll the red ball again as Sri Lanka host India in what is going to be a thrilling 2-match Test series. The first Test will be played from Saturday, August 15 onwards at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
The two game Test series will be played as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027 cycle. There are crucial points up for grabs for either side. Team India sit 5th in the points table with 48.15 PCT%. Sri Lanka follows at 6th with 41.67 PCT%. This series could just be the make or break for both sides.
The sub-continental rivals have a big history dating back to 1982. There have been a total of 46 Test matches played between the two teams in which Team India has a huge advantage with 22 wins while the Lankan Lions have won only 7 matches.
This is a massive home series for Sri Lanka. Beyond crucial World Test Championship points up for grabs, the Lankan Lions aim to end an 18-year wait for a Test win over India on home soil.
Led by Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka face one of the world’s strongest Test sides amid mixed recent form, just one win in the last six Tests since January 2025. That win came against West Indies in their last game. Meanwhile injuries to Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis have forced Niroshan Dickwella’s return to the side for the first time since 2023.
The batting load falls heavily on captain de Silva and Kamindu Mendis. The 27-year-old Kamindu boasts the highest average in the squad having scored 1,453 runs in 28 innings at 58.12 average. He will be supported in the middle order by Dinesh Chandimal and Dickwella, while opener Lahiru Udara arrives in strong form after scoring 188 runs in a single inning during the recent West Indies series.
With the ball, left-arm orthodox spinner Prabath Jayasuriya is likely to be the standout player. In 23 Tests he has taken 125 wickets, including 85 at Galle. Fellow spinners Dhananajaya de Silva (43 wickets), Ramesh Mendis (71) and Kamindu Mendis will look to exploit home conditions.
The pace attack of Asitha Fernando (87 wickets) and Vishwa Fernando (81) can trouble India’s top order with pace and variation, while Lahiru Kumara and Milan Rathnayake offer additional options. The latter is especially in good form having claimed 10 wickets in his last three Test matches.
Lahiru Udara, Nishan Madushka, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella (WK), Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Ramesh Mendis, Sonal Dinusha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando.
Team India have underperformed in the ongoing World Test Championship 2025-2027 cycle. Currently 5th with a 48.15% points percentage, the Gautam Gambhir coached side has slipped into mid-table after missing the 2025 final as they finished third.
Almost every remaining game is now a must-win, and the first challenge is Sri Lanka. India hold a strong historical edge over the mighty Lankans with eight wins and two draws in their last 10 Tests against the Island nation.
A recent warm-up fixture victory by six wickets against Sri Lanka XI offered useful preparation. Captain Shubman Gill suffered a finger injury during the game, but he has now been cleared to play.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are expected to open the innings. Jaiswal has struggled of late in red ball cricket. He scored 83 runs in four innings against South Africa and just 24 against West Indies in the last few innings, while the experienced Rahul brings form after a century in the one-off Test versus Afghanistan.
Captain Gill will bat at number 3. He has actually been in great form during this WTC cycle. He scored 754 runs vs England, 192 runs vs West Indies and scored a brilliant 126 runs in the recent one-off Test match vs Afghanistan.
The middle order features Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel, the attacking Rishabh Pant, who has now gained reputation as one of the best batters in India Test setup, and Sarfaraz Khan who has been called up as injury replacement for Sai Sudharsan.
The biggest absence though is Jasprit Bumrah, ruled out of the series because of an injury after initially being included in the squad. He has been replaced by Auqib Nabi, the Jammu and Kashmir pacer who claimed 60 wickets in the Ranji Trophy last season.
Seasoned campaigner Mohammed Siraj is a confirmed starter, with Prasidh Krishna, Nabi and Gurnoor Brar competing for the remaining pace spots. Brar in particular is a pretty exciting story. He has been working hard in the domestic circuit and finally in 2026, he got called-up to the Indian team for a 3 match ODI series vs Afghanistan where he got 7 wickets followed by another 4 against England.
Spin will likely decide the contest on sub-continental pitches. With Ravichandran Ashwin now retired, Ravindra Jadeja (348 Test wickets) leads the spin bowling attack. Madhya Pradesh’s all-rounder Saransh Jain has been included in the team as Ashwin’s replacement.
Meanwhile, Manav Suthar, who is getting incredible backing from the coaching staff, impressed on debut against Afghanistan taking 7 wickets. Kuldeep Yadav though adds an extra bit of spice with his wrist-spin bowling. The last time he played in Sri Lanka back in 2017, he took 5 wickets in a Test.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill (C), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
Over the next few days in Galle, we expect typical tropical conditions with warm, humid weather. The temperature during the day could reach highs upto 31°C and around 28°C by evening. There is a 25-40% probability of precipitation on a few days. Mostly cloudy skies with a high chance of rain is expected.
The pitch is a classic spin-friendly Sri Lankan surface. It generally starts as a good batting track with true bounce, allowing teams to post substantial first-innings totals. As the match progresses, the surface deteriorates, developing cracks and offering sharp turn and variable bounce, especially from Day 3 onwards. Spinners dominate later stages. Pacers can get limited early swing due to coastal humidity but have less impact overall.
It would be the ideal decision to bat first upon winning the toss. Here at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, the surface is typically the best to bat on day 1 and 2 with cracking appearing from 3. Spin bowlers will be in control of the game for the majority of the game, so it is ideal to bat first and get a good 1st innings score on board.
Expect Team India to edge a tight contest in Galle. Shubman Gill’s recent red-ball form will be key alongside the spin threat of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav should prove decisive on a turning surface. Sri Lanka’s hopes rest heavily on Prabath Jayasuriya’s Galle expertise and Kamindu Mendis’ batting consistency, yet India’s greater overall strength is superior, so expect their 18 year unbeaten streak in Sri Lanka to continue.
