Late on Saturday evening, in front of an expectant, excited and well-oiled crowd at Edgbaston, Somerset defeated Hampshire by six wickets to win the 2025 T20 Blast.

Those same two teams will meet again, barely 36 hours later, and in a different format, this time at the County Ground, Taunton, as the penultimate round of the County Championship Division One gets underway.

Somerset come into this game in third place, 22 points behind Notts in third and 23 points from Surrey at the top of the table, however, the two front-runners go head to head this week so a win for the Cidermen could put them back in the mix for the title.

As for Hampshire in eighth, they start this round of matches only six points above Durham in ninth and they can ill-afford to drop points.

It all adds up to another exciting contest between these two teams.

Somerset Preview

Somerset return to Taunton, the scene of their drawn match with Yorkshire in the last round of fixtures and they will be hoping for more cricket to be possible over the coming four days after 441/6 declared played 134/9 declared!

Ultimately, the time lost to rain in that game could cost Somerset a tilt at the title, but if they are to still be in the mix by the time the final round of fixtures begins then they must win this match.

Runs are never going to be a problem for this Somerset side with Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Archie Vaughan at the top of the order, keeper-batter James Rew at number four with Tom Abell at five. They also have plenty of runs down the order with all-rounder, skipper Lewis Gregory batting at number ten!

With the ball, Jack Leach will exploit any spin on offer while Gregory and Josh Davey will be the key pacers in the team.

Somerset Predicted Playing XI:

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Archie Vaughan, Tom Lammonby, James Rew (wk), Tom Abell, Lewis Goldsworthy, Kasey Aldridge, Ben Green, Josh Davey, Lewis Gregory (c), Jack Leach

Hampshire Preview

Although the XI will be very different from the one who were beaten in the 2025 T20 Blast Final on Saturday, the county as a whole will still be hurting and Hampshire will look to the team it puts out in this game for revenge!

Hampshire also drew their last game, against struggling Sussex, although the game was well poised with their fellow south-coast opponents on 84/3 while chasing 278 for victory.

Skipper Ben Brown comes into this game in strong form with the bat and the experienced Nick Gubbins will also be vital to Hampshire's hopes of avoiding the drop.

With the ball, Kyle Abbott remains a real threat at this level and spinner Bjorn Fortuin will also cause problems if there is turn to exploit.

Hampshire Predicted Playing XI:

Ali Orr, Fletcha Middleton, Nick Gubbins, Toby Albert, Ben Brown (c) (wk), Tom Prest, Bjorn Fortuin, James Fuller, Keith Barker, Kyle Abbott, Eddie Jack

Weather Conditions

There will be a threat of rain across all of days two to four but day one, Monday, looks like being sunny and bright. Gone are the hot conditions of the summer though with the high temperature of 15 degrees on day one!

SOM vs HAM Pitch Report

Taunton is an excellent venue for cricket and if other results as well as this one go the way of Somerset then there could be a big crowd in by Thursday. Expect seam and swing bowlers to be the key with a par first innings total of around 350.

Toss: To Bat

Day one, Monday, looks likely to be the best time to bat across the coming four days of this game so we are predicting that both teams will choose to bat first at the toss.

There will certainly still be a feel-good atmosphere around Taunton ahead of this match and we expect Somerset to have too much quality with bat and ball for Hampshire over the four days of the game.

We are backing Somerset to win!
