Somerset Women Preview

Somerset Women after pulling off an incredible run-chase of 239 runs against Surrey Women in the first match of the season, were completely outplayed in the previous match by Lancashire Women on Sunday at Taunton. Somerset Women were asked to bat first by Lancashire Women on a tricky track which favoured the bowlers.

Four of the top six batters scored in single digits, with Emma Corney (35 runs in 79 balls) being the top scorer from the top five batters. At one point Somerset Women were reduced to 6-89 in 31.2 overs. Just when they were starring down the barrell, Alex Griffiths (46 runs) and Amanda Jade Wellington (26 runs) added 56 runs for the 7th wicket. But both the batters were back in the dugout in quick succession.

Chloe Skelton (24* runs) and Laura Jackson's (13* runs) 11th wicket partnership of 30 runs powered Somerset Women past the 200 run mark as they ended up at 205/9 in 50 overs. Defending a moderate score, Somerset Women were lacklustre and failed to get early breakthroughs as Lancashire Women added 151 runs for the first wicket making a one-sided run-chase. Ellie Anderson, Charlie Dean and Amanda-Jade Wellington picked up a wicket each.

The onus will once again be on their opening pair of Heather Knight and Emma Corney to do bulk of the scoring, while rest of the batters can chip with the bat. But the majore area of concern for Somerset Women is their bowling. So far in the season they have gone at an economy of 6.43 runs and managed to take 10 wickets. Their fast bowling attack looks a bit bleak where wickets in the first 10 overs have been hard to come by.

Somerset Women Predicted Playing XI:

Heather Knight, Emma Corney, Fran Wilson, Charlie Dean, Amanda Jade Wellington, Katie Jones (wk), Alex Griffiths, Sophie Luff (C), Chole Skelton, Ellie Anderson, Laura Jackson

Essex Women Preview

After losing their first match of the season by 9-wickets against Durham Women, Essex Women lost their previous match against Warwickshire Women by a huge margin of 108 runs, which has dented their net run rate early in the season. Now they are relinquishing at 7th place with zero points above Surrey Women.

Despite winning the toss and opting to field fast on a balance track, Essex Women conceded 289 runs. They dismantled the Bears top order and were right on top of the game, where Warwickshire Women were reeling at 22/5, but the 6th and 7th wicket partnerships of 101 runs and 131 runs resulted in a complete shift in momentum. Eva Gray was the top scorer with the ball finishing with figures of 5/62. Sophie Munro also picked up 2 wickets but was a hit expensive conceding 65 runs in 9 overs.

Then chasing down a huge total of 290 runs, Essex Women got off a good start scoring 104 runs in 24 overs, but lost three wickets. Their captain Grace Scrivens (53 runs) and Cordelia Griffith (72 runs) were the top -scorers. While rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 181 runs in 39 overs.

The lack of experience in their middle order has cause huge problems for Essex Women in both the matches, while their bowling lineup needs to buckle up and not give up easy runs and allow partnerships to build in the middle overs. If they can do better in these two areas, then they are not far away from a win.

Essex Women Predicted Playing XI:

Grace Scrivens ©, Joanne Gardner, Cordelia Griffith, Jodi Grewcock, Florence Miller, Alice McLeod, Sophia Smale, Amara Carr (wk), Eva Gray, Kate Coppack, Beth McGregor.

Weather Conditions

SOMW vs ESSW Pitch Report

The pitch at The Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton offers a balanced track, where the average 1st innings score in the last five matches played is 251 runs. Teams batting first has the advantage at this venue and fast bowlers are mighty effective.

Toss: To Bat

The team batting first won six of the last eight women's 50-over matches played at The Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton. The surface tends to slow down a touch as the game progresses and team's more often than not crumble under pressure while batting second at this venue.

Somerset Women enter this contest as favourites despite their loss in the last match. They have a well balanced squad with depth in batting and three frontline spinners, all three game changers. While Essex Women has a fragile batting order and their bowlers have been below par with their performance. We are backing the home team Somerset Women to win this fixture.
