On June 29th, Sussex Sharks will host Kent Spitfires at County Ground, Hove to play their ninth game of this season. The match will kick off at 19:00 pm local time. Sharks are currently sitting in the 3rd spot of the points table with 10 points and have lost only one game this season. Kent have 12 points in 8 games and are on the second spot due to lower NRR. Sussex suffered heartbreak against visiting Surrey when umpires led the players off the field and didn’t return. They were 1 ball away from the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern taking over the results. Chasing 176 runs target set by Surrey, Sussex made a firecracker start by scoring 43 runs in 4.5 overs for the loss of 1 wicket. They were well ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern rate before the umpires halted the game. Both teams shared a point each. Tymal Mills took 3 wickets for Sussex to continue his great run with the ball.

At Chelmsford, Skipper Daniel Bell-Drummond guided Kent to their sixth victory of the season. Batting first Kent set a target of 168 runs with Drummond’s 29 ball fifty. With a threat of rain, Essex tried to speed up the things but couldn’t succeed. Essex lost 4 wickets for 31 runs in 5 overs before rain stopped the play. Kent were declared winners by 28 runs (DLS method). Matt Milnes took 2 wickets for 15 runs in his 3 overs spell.

In 32 T20 matches between these two, Kent have won 14 times. Sussex have managed to win on 11 occasions. Last season both teams won their home games while chasing. This match will be their first encounter of this season with returning game at Kent scheduled on 18th July.

Sussex Preview

Sussex’s momentum is being hampered by the continuous interruption from rain. Out of 8 games so far, they have played 4, won 3, lost 1, and shared one point each with their opponents in the remaining 4 matches due to rain. Sussex won 3 games while chasing the target. But the plan backfired against Gloucestershire as they ended up on the losing side. Skipper Luke Wright and keeper Phillip Salt have provided Sussex with an explosive start in all the games they opened together. They will need to improve their partnership as they haven’t been able to convert this start to a long-standing partnership. Salt has scored 193 runs in 6 games at a strike rate of 150.78 and is leading the run-scoring front for the Sharks. Travis Head is having an unsuccessful season so far with the Sharks. Sussex might go with Aaron Thomason to boost their top-order with veteran Ravi Bopara.

Sharks’ All-rounder David Wisse and George Garton have been consistent so far. Garton has picked 8 wickets at an average of 13.25. Tymal Mills has taken the baton of the bowling department in his hand and picked 9 wickets so far in 5 outings. Sussex bowlers have the least average in the Vitality Blast.

Key Players: Philip Salt, George Garton, Luke Wright

Sussex Predicted Playing XI:

Philip Salt (wk), Luke Wright (c), Travis Head, Ravi Bopara, David Wiese, Delray Rawlins, George Garton, Aaron Thomason, Will Beer, Tymal Mills, Archie Lenham

Kent Preview

Kent openers Zak Crawley and Daniel Bell-Drummond are proving to be every team’s dream. They have put 2 fifty runs stand in the last 3 games. Bell-Drummond’s 88, 50, and 11 in the last three games are surely getting the things done for the Spitfires. The only problem they are facing is the poor form of Joe Denly. Denly has not crossed 2 digits in the last three games and this has been a hurdle for the management to see a replacement for the number three position.

Jack Leaning is a surprise package for the Spitfires with his short but important innings. Leaning hammered 42 runs in 17 balls with help of 2 fours and 4 sixes. Kent’s 236 runs against Essex showed they are the force not to reckoned with. The balanced top and middle order have emerged as the title contender material for Kent. Matt Milnes and Fred Klassen will team up once again in the bowling unit. Milnes has taken 13 wickets at an average of 15.46 whereas Klassen has 11 in his pockets at an economy of 8.20

Key Players: Glenn Phillips, Josh Shaw, Chris Dent.

Kent Predicted Playing XI:

Chris Dent, Miles Hammond, Benny Howell, Glenn Phillips (wk), Jack Taylor (c), Ryan Higgins, Benny Howell, Tom Smith, Josh Shaw, David Payne, Daniel Worrall

Weather Conditions

The pitch helps swing bowling. The ball dips sometimes as the ground slopes slightly towards the sea. The maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to be  19°C and 12 °C respectively, with a wind speed of 10 to 15 kmph. Humidity will be around 85-90% as per the weather reports. Showers are expected with an 80% chance.

Venue Details

The game will be played at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove. Built in 1872, the stadium has a capacity of 4000. The venue has hosted one ODI and T20I each.

Toss: To Bowl

44 domestic T20s have been played at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove. The defenders and the chasers of the target have shared the victory 21 times each. On 5 of the last 8 occasions, the team bowling first has won the game. Bowling first will be an ideal option in such a scenario after winning the toss.

Three of the last five games at County Ground, Hove have been affected by the rain. If a game is possible tomorrow Sussex will have a home advantage. Since Kent are going to play back-to-back games, it will make it difficult to give their 100%. Overall, Sussex seem to have an upper hand over Kent going into this encounter.

We predict that Sussex will defeat Gloucestershire Gladiators.
