Wellington look for a positive start to the Plunket Shield when they head over to the Basin Reserve in Wellington for a match against rivals Auckland. This first game of the 2024-25 campaign witnesses Wellington as the defending champions for the 22nd time. This status is likely to put pressure on the team to secure a winning start. Throughout last season, Auckland could only manage a single victory in the opening game could not have been any tougher for the team. The start of the first-class domestic season in New Zealand is likely to be met with a lot of excitement.

Wellington Firebirds Preview

Wellington had an enormously successful 2023-24 season after managing to finish as the champions of the Plunket Shield. Over the course of the season, the team did not lose any game and they ended up with four victories out of the eight matches. The team finished just three points above Northern Districts in the points table.

Gareth Severin was influential throughout the season for Wellington with the bat as he turned up with 657 runs from his 14 innings and had an average of 47. The batting line-up was a big strength for the team with Nick Kelly finishing up with 65 runs from his 14 innings. These two players were able to dominate the batting line-up for Wellington. The opposition are likely to place special emphasis on stopping these two.

Nathan Smith turned out to be the top wicket-taker for the team with 33 throughout the campaign from his 12 innings at an average of 17. Smith has shown good form in recent matches after picking up two wickets in the recent game against Northern Districts.

Wellington Firebirds Predicted Playing XI:

Tim Robinson, Nick Greenwood, Gareth Severin, Nick Kelly, Muhammad Abbas, Tom Blundell (c), Michael Bracewell, Nathan Smith, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband, Ben Sears

Auckland Aces Preview

Auckland come on the back of a very disappointing 2023-24 season after finishing bottom of the table. The team finished three points from the nearest fifth-placed outfit. The only victory for the team throughout the campaign came against Central Districts in the middle of the season. Even then, they were unable to assert a lot of advantages.

One of the top strengths for Auckland last season came in the batting line-up. The team was able to witness players like Sean Solia, George Worker, and William O’Donnell, with impressive performances throughout the season. The former managed 602 runs from his 15 innings and he was the only Auckland player to cross 600+ runs. Worker and O’Donnell were able to finish with just under 500 runs from their 15 innings.

Louis Delport and Danru Ferns were able to create the most damage with the ball after managing to hit 24 and 23 wickets from their 11 and 14 innings respectively. It was with the ball that Auckland were unable to make a major impact. The team will be trying to address one of these issues, as they look to finish above the bottom. The kick-off of the domestic first-class season will be a big motivation for the team which had to wait until several weeks into the 2023-24 season for the first one.

Auckland Aces Predicted Playing XI:

William O'Donnell, Sean Solia, Quinn Sunde, Robert O'Donnell (c), George Worker, Jock McKenzie, Cole Briggs, Danru Ferns, Louis Delport, Jordan Sussex, Angus Olliver
