Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 41 runs

West Indies have lost five of their last six ODIs - the only win coming in a Super Over against Bangladesh - but have not dropped a home ODI series since 2023, a streak spanning four series across England and Pakistan.

  • Shai Hope’s record versus Sri Lanka is exceptional: 13 ODIs, 607 runs at 47.
  • Wanindu Hasaranga will pose a genuine threat against West Indies, as he has 11 wickets in 9 ODIs against them at an economy of just 4.25.
  • Sri Lanka have won three of their last four ODIs against West Indies.

Sri Lanka are our picks for the winners of this match.

Sabina Park hosts the first of three ODIs on Tuesday, and the stakes could hardly be higher for the home side. West Indies sit 10th in the ICC ODI rankings and must climb into the top eight to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup, making this series far more than a bilateral exercise. Every point in the rankings matters, and a series defeat at home would be a serious blow to their qualification hopes.

In 68 ODIs between these sides, Sri Lanka hold a narrow edge with 33 wins to West Indies' 32, making this as evenly matched a fixture as exists in international cricket.

West Indies' best hope lies in their home conditions and the return of Alzarri Joseph, whose pace at Sabina Park will trouble even the most accomplished batting lineup. If Shai Hope and Keacy Carty can weather the Sri Lankan spinners and build a competitive total, the home seam attack has the tools to defend it. But Sri Lanka arrive with Nissanka in the form of his life, a refreshed Hasaranga, and the confidence of a side that has won three of their last five encounters with these opponents. The tourists are slight favourites.

West Indies Preview

West Indies head into this series at a crossroads. They have lost five of their last six ODIs, with the only win coming via a Super Over against Bangladesh, and sit 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, needing to climb into the top eight to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. Home comfort, at least, is a genuine asset: they have won their last four series at home dating back to 2023.

The batting is anchored by captain Shai Hope, one of the most reliable ODI batters in the world. He has scored 6,113 runs in 148 ODIs at an average of 51, and his composure at the top is the foundation everything else is built on. Keacy Carty at number three has emerged as a genuine partner; he was the leading run-scorer in the ODI series against England in late 2024 with 218 runs, confirming his growing importance to this lineup. Sherfane Rutherford adds explosive finishing ability, having a strike rate of 101 in the format.

The returns of Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph give the seam attack a very different complexion. Alzarri is in line to play his first internationals since July 2025 after recovering from a back injury, and his pace at Sabina Park will be a handful. Jayden Seales provides reliable support, while Gudakesh Motie returns to add left-arm spin after being dropped for form concerns last year.

The wildcard is Shimron Hetmyer, who will join the squad ahead of the final ODI as part of a strategic build-up towards the 2027 World Cup. His reintegration will be closely watched.

Key Players: Shai Hope, Sherfane Rutherford, Alzarri Joseph

Sri Lanka Preview

Under new ODI captain Kusal Mendis, this is a Sri Lankan team in the midst of a quiet transformation.

The batting is formidable from top to bottom. Pathum Nissanka is the cornerstone, quite simply one of the form batters in world cricket. Between 2024 and early 2026, he ranked second in the world for most international runs across all formats, behind only Joe Root. In 77 ODIs, he has scored 2,920 runs at an average of 41, and his ability to accelerate at will, evidenced by a 210 off 139 balls against Afghanistan in 2024, makes him as dangerous as any opener in the format.

Mendis himself brings 4,890 runs across 154 ODIs at an average of 35 to the top of the order, and was player of the series against Bangladesh in 2025 with 225 runs. Pavan Rathnayake was the team’s leading run-scorer in the ODI series against England in January 2026 with 162 runs, confirming his emergence as a genuine middle-order force. Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Janith Liyanage provide further batting depth.

The return of Wanindu Hasaranga is the headline moment for the bowling attack. He had earlier taken nine wickets to lead Sri Lanka's bowling in the ODI series against Bangladesh in mid-2025, and his return gives this attack a genuine match-winning dimension.

Dunith Wellalage took six wickets in the ODI series against Australia in 2025, adding left-arm variety alongside Hasaranga's leg-spin. The pace department, boasting Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga, is one of the quickest in this format, with all three capable of touching 140kph.

Key Players: Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Wanindu Hasaranga

SL Over/Under Betting Tips

Kusal Mendis Total Runs Over 27.5 @ 1.85

The new skipper of Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis is coming into this series on the back of a prolific performance in the PSL, where he scored over 550 runs. In the last three ODI's he scored 139 runs, averaging well over 27. His record against West Indies is top notch (437 runs in 10 matches, averaging 43.7). Given his current run of form and record against West Indies, we back Mendis to score over 27 runs in today's match.

Weather Conditions

Kingston in early June offers a predictable tropical rhythm: bright sunshine interrupted by brief, sharp showers that often clear as quickly as they arrive. The forecast for match morning suggests temperatures reaching 30‑32°C (86‑90°F) at the start of play, climbing toward 32‑34°C (90‑93°F) by midday before afternoon thunderstorms roll in. Humidity will remain high, hovering around 70‑80% throughout the match window. There is a 60‑70% chance of scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, which could bring temporary interruptions, but morning conditions are expected to be mostly dry. The south‑easterly breeze, common in Kingston during this season, may offer seamers some assistance early. Overall, the opening session should be clear, with a watchful eye on the radar as the innings progresses.

WI vs SL Pitch Report

Sabina Park has hosted 40 ODIs. Teams bowling first have won 24 of those contests, while those batting first have claimed 15 victories. The average first‑innings score of 235 is notably higher than the second‑innings average of 193, reflecting a surface that tends to slow and offer increasing turn to spinners as the match wears on.

The pitch at Sabina Park is characterised by its firm, true bounce - a classic Caribbean surface that rewards batters who play straight and punishes those who rely on cross‑bat shots early. Spin bowlers have historically enjoyed success here, with left‑arm orthodox and leg‑spin both proving effective as the pitch begins to grip. The boundaries are relatively generous by modern standards, measuring approximately 68 metres square metres and 75 metres straight. A score of around 260-270 will be considered above par.

Total Over/Under Betting Tips

West Indies to win the coin toss @ 1.90

We back West Indies to win the coin toss in today's match against Sri Lanka.

Toss: To Bowl

Of the 40 ODIs played at Sabina Park, teams batting first have won 15, compared to 24 victories for sides chasing. Early‑morning conditions in Kingston can offer seam movement under cloud cover, but the Caribbean sun tends to flatten the surface quickly, making batting progressively easier through the middle overs. The captain who wins the toss is likely to insert the opposition, trusting their spinners to exploit any wear in the pitch while keeping the target within a comfortable chasing range.

This series opener is less about outright firepower and more about who settles faster. West Indies boast an extraordinary home record - four consecutive ODI series wins since 2023. But their recent white‑ball form has been patchy, and five losses in six ODIs suggest a brittleness that Sri Lanka may exploit.

The visitors, meanwhile, are led by a returning captain playing his first ODI series in the Caribbean, and a spin attack featuring Hasaranga, Theekshana, and Wellalage that could be decisive on a surface that historically assists slow bowling through the afternoon. West Indies have the raw pace and the home crowd, but Sri Lanka's variety, particularly in the middle overs, might just give them the edge in a low‑scoring contest. The toss will be crucial: chasing has been the winning formula here, and the team that bowls first will have the upper hand.

Sri Lanka are our picks for the winners of this match.
