Warwickshire take on Worcestershire in the first quarter final of this year’s Metro Bank Cup at Edgbaston. Both teams have traced their own paths to reach here, with Warwickshire showing superior form with five wins from the first five games.

A no result against eventual toppers Glamorgan and back to back defeats against Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire dented Warwickshire’s chances of finishing higher on the points table. Worcestershire, who also kicked off their campaign with a bang winning 3 out of 3, lost momentum and consistency and picked up just two wins from the next five to get to this stage.

They, too, will feel a little underconfident coming into the knockouts with a 3-run defeat to Lancashire in the last league fixture. With a place in the semis on the line, both teams will be trying to come hard at each other, making this an excellent contest for the average viewer.

Birmingham Bears Preview

Consecutive losses to Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire dented Warwickshire’s chances of finishing at the top of the tree. They kept pace with the eventual toppers Glamorgan for five of the eight games, however after a no-result and two losses to end their league stage, here they are playing in a virtual quarter final to advance further in this competition.

Only Rob Yates made a 50+ score in the last two games, with plenty of players failing to capitalize on good starts including captain Ed Barnard, Chris Benjamin, Kai Smith, Michael Burgess, Will Rhodes and Jake Lintott. Scores like 242 and 182 are not guaranteed to win you games unless you bowl out of your skins and find a way to dismantle the opposition pretty quickly.

Only Jake Lintott, with his left arm wrist spin, bowled like he could take wickets at will, and the rest of the bowling attack was as flat as they’ve been the whole competition. Ed Barnard, the key man for Warwickshire, has to lead the way with both bat and ball – just like he did in the first five games.

There’s daylight between Barnard (390 runs off 8 matches) and the second on the list of top run scorer for Warwickshire Will Rhodes (230 runs from as many matches), but they need to start firing if they want to dominate the contest.

Birmingham Bears Predicted Playing XI:

Robert Yates, Ed Barnard(c), Will Rhodes, Hamza Shaikh, Michael Burgess(w), Kai Smith, Chris Benjamin, Jake Lintott, Craig Miles, Michael Booth, Tazeem Chaudry Ali.

Worcestershire Preview

After opening their campaign with 3 massive victories on the bounce —two at home against Middlesex and Durham and one away from home against Derbyshire — Worcestershire’s momentum was gathering pace. But it all came to a screeching halt in their fourth game, when Northamptonshire handed them a 130-run drubbing.

Worcs did well to bounce back from that with a 3 wicket win over Kent at home, but then their visit to Taunton to face Somerset didn’t go to plan. Somerset handed them their second defeat in six matches, but thanks to all the good work that the Worcs did early on, they were still in the running to seal a spot in the knockouts. In their next game against Hampshire at home, they dismissed Hampshire cheaply for 164 and went on to complete the chase in a canter, winning the game comfortably by 8 wickets.

But their recent encounter against Lancashire was not what they needed with the playoffs in sight. Chasing 238 for a win, they were always behind the chase, but the lower order fought bravely and pushed the game into the final over where they had to settle for a narrow 3-run defeat. Jake Home is breathing fire with the ball snaring 15 wickets from 4 games, the same number that another form bowler Fateh Singh has taken 7 matches to get to.

With the bat, Josh Libby (414 runs from 8 matches) and Gareth Roderick (389 runs from 8 games) are leading the way, and they’ll be looking to make a mark in the knockouts alongside Ed Pollock who has amassed 333 runs from 8 matches so far.

Worcestershire Predicted Playing XI:

Ed Pollock, Gareth Roderick(w), Rob Jones, Jake Libby(c), Ethan Brookes, Rehaan Edavalath, Fateh Singh, Tom Hinley, Tommy Sturgess, Jack Home, Hishaam Khan.

Weather Conditions

Teams were bundled out for 120 and 93 batting first here last season, and we also had another match where the team batting first scored 330+odd and the chasing team came so close only to fall short by one run. The run aggregate almost touched 700 in that match. As you'd have guessed by now, this wicket has proven a little challenging to get a read on, so any score above 260 should make for a decent total batting first. It actually gives something for your bowlers to work with. Weather-wise, things are looking good with a lot of sunshine interspersed with some cloud cover.

WRW vs WOR Pitch Report

This match will be played at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. The home county Warwickshire have an excellent track record playing at this venue, and will be hoping to emulate some of their best performances here in this crucial fixture.

Toss: To Bowl

Both teams have enjoyed more success chasing and will be confident about completing a chase coming into this fixture. And so both captains will be eager to put the opposition into have a bat first, assess the conditions and make plans for their chase.

Worcestershire’s away record this season has been poor with just one win from four matches. And they are going to find Warwickshire, with an impressive home advantage, extremely hard to defeat. Warwickshire, to win.

Our prediction is for Warwickshire to win this contest.
