The two-time AFCON champions could not have asked for a better start, brushing aside Sudan 3–0 in their opener. Having finally cleared the hurdle of winning a group game— something that eluded them in 2021 and 2023 — Les Fennecs return to Rabat aiming for back-to-back wins and early knockout qualification when they face Burkina Faso on Sunday (11 PM IST). But it won’t be straightforward, with Burkina Faso arriving high on confidence after a spirited late comeback win over Equatorial Guinea.

Current Standings: Algeria sit proudly atop Group E with three points to their name, while Burkina Faso are hot on their heels in second, level on points.

Head-to-Head Record: It’s finely balanced between the two, with neither side holding the edge in eight meetings  producing  two wins apiece and four draws.

Algeria Preview

It was third time lucky for Algeria, who finally ended their AFCON winless run after frustrations in the last two editions. They did it in style too, almost matching their combined goal tally from 2021 and 2023 ( 4 goals) in one night, as Riyad Mahrez shined with a brace and Ibrahim Maza scored his first International goal in Algerian colours.

Another standout moment came with Luca Zidane, son of the legendary Zinedine Zidane, making his AFCON debut in goal after Alexis Guendouz’s injury. Thrown in unexpectedly, the keeper showed maturity beyond the moment, staying calm and assured while pulling off two neat saves.

Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Amoura delivered exactly what Vladimir Petković would have hoped for. After going goalless in the last two AFCON editions, Mahrez rediscovered his touch to move past Lakhdar Belloumi’s six-goal mark, while Amoura — Les Fennecs’ leading scorer in World Cup qualifiers with 10 goals — capped his display with a timely assist.

Algeria Probable Starting Lineup - Zidane (GK); Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait Nouri, Boudaoui, Bennacer, Mahrez, Chaibi, Bounedjah, Amoura

Burkina Faso Preview

Burkina Faso stretched their unbeaten run to seven games in dramatic fashion, pulling off a stunning comeback with two stoppage-time goals against Guinea. Trailing late despite dominating proceedings, the Stallions once again showed their resilience, flipping the script in an eight-minute blitz as Tapsoba and Georgi Minoungou struck deep into added time to seal a memorable turnaround.

That win would have reignited belief for the Stallions, who can now dare to dream of yet another run beyond the AFCON group stage — a feat they’ve achieved in all five of their appearances. Added to that is the confidence drawn from their 2–2 draw with Algeria in the last edition, setting the stage nicely for Sunday’s showdown.

Bertrand Traoré, Dango Ouattara and Lassina Traoré make up Burkina Faso’s potent attacking trio, though only two featured last time out. With Lassina — their top scorer in World Cup qualifying — starting on the bench, it was Ouattara who stole the spotlight, delivering a key assist and firing off four shots, while Bertrand quietly impressed with a solid all-round display.

Burkina Faso Probable Starting Lineup - Koffi (GK); Yago, Dayo, Tapsoba, Kouassi, Kabore, Sangare, Ouedraogo, Toure, Bertrand Traore, Ouattara

Algeria arrive on Sunday riding an imposing 23-game unbeaten run across all competitions, with four wins in their last six. Burkina Faso, though, are no pushovers, unbeaten in seven themselves. On form alone it’s a tight call, but Algeria’s edge in quality and their knack for deciding key moments against stronger opposition tips the balance towards a win — or at least a draw — for Les Fennecs.
