After a truncated 2025/26 campaign, the MG Indian Super League returns to its traditional format for the 2026/27 season, featuring a round-robin league phase followed by the playoffs and final. The team finishing top of the 13-team table will lift the ISL Shield and secure continental qualification, while the playoff finalists will battle for the ISL Cup.

The league has 13 teams this season instead of 14 after the newly promoted Diamond Harbour failed to complete the participation requirements with the AIFF. Meanwhile, Churchill Brothers FC enter the ISL after acquiring Jamshedpur FC’s league licence.

The season gets underway on October 10, 2026, and runs until May 2027, with former champions Bengaluru FC opening the campaign against Sporting Delhi on Friday.

Bengaluru FC Preview

Bengaluru FC return to the ISL with hopes of reclaiming the title they last won in 2018-19. Since then, the Blues have finished runners-up three times, most recently in 2024-25, and will be determined to go one step further this time.

Last season, Bengaluru finished fourth, three points behind the eventual league winners after a late slump that saw them draw three consecutive games. Ryan Williams and Braian Sanchez led the scoring charts with four goals each, but Sanchez has since departed alongside notable names such as Rahul Bheke, Halicharan Narzary and Kuziev.

The Blues have responded with several reinforcements, including PSV academy graduate Menno Koch, attacking midfielder Borja Martinez, striker Mihailo Perovic, Manuel de Iriondo and Sandro Embalo. Pep Munoz will also continue at the helm, now armed with a full season of experience with the club.

Bengaluru FC Probable starting Lineup

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (GK); Nikhil Poojary, Chinglensana Singh, Menno Koch, Naorem Roshan Singh, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Manuel de Iriondo, Ryan Williams, Lalremtluanga Fanai, Ashique Kuruniyan, Mihailo Perović

Sporting Club Delhi Preview

Formerly known as Hyderabad FC, Sporting Delhi began life under their new name last season and narrowly avoided finishing at the bottom, ending 12th with 11 points from two wins, five draws and six defeats.

Their standout results included victories over Kerala Blasters and NorthEast United, along with draws against Mumbai City and Jamshedpur FC. Matija Babovic and Joseph Sunny accounted for eight of their 13 goals, but top scorer Babovic has since departed along with several other key names.

Sporting Delhi have responded by rebuilding with a mix of domestic and overseas recruits. Carlos Fortes, a forward with European experience, Lalrinliana Hnamte, who brings plenty of ISL pedigree, and Juan Pena, Nduka Junior and Alan Saji are among the new faces to watch. Tomasz Tchorz will continue to lead the side as they look to make a bigger impact this season.

Sporting FC Delhi Probable starting Lineup

Nora Fernandes (GK) ; Lamgoulen Gou Hangshing, Nduka Junior, Duván Viáfara, Lalrinliana Hnamte, David Richard Ndayishimiye, Ayush Adhikari, Joseph Sunny, Juan Peña, Ramhlunchhunga, Carlos Fortes

There is little history between these sides, although Bengaluru FC had the upper hand when they last met. However, the Blues’ home form remains a concern, having managed just one win in six home games last season and currently carrying a five-match winless run at home.

Sporting Delhi haven’t fared much better on the road, with just one win from seven away games and two consecutive defeats. Despite those records, Bengaluru’s overall experience at this level as a group gives them the edge, making them the favourites heading into Friday’s opener.

Bengaluru FC to win (2-0).
