Brighton’s chances of bringing European football to the club next season are still within their own hands, as they face a crucial final week of the campaign.

The Seagulls have been surprisingly inconsistent of late, losing three of their last six and therefore saying goodbye to a potential 5th placed finish.

That said, they are capable of some devastating performances, as we saw against Arsenal last weekend. Now, they can take a step closer to Europa League action with victory here.

Southampton aren’t in a particularly strong position to stop them, having been officially relegated last weekend. They needed to beat Fulham to have any chance of survival, but lost 2-0 in front of their own supporters.

The club will face a giant rebuild in the summer, when many of their senior players will either look to leave the club or will be forced to stay with lower wages.

You feel sorry for their fans, who deserve better from a club of their size.

Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Huge win over Arsenal last weekend

Need six points from remaining three games to guarantee Europe

Reasons to be fearful:

Players looked fatigued in midweek defeat to Newcastle

Multiple injuries could derail season finish

Brighton’s inconsistencies of late can be put down to the number of games they’ve played this season with a limited squad at Roberto De Zerbi’s disposal.

Their last four games have seen them beat Manchester United, get hammered 5-1 by Everton, thrash title chasers Arsenal 3-0, before losing disappointingly to Newcastle 4-1.

There is very little in between excellent and poor for Brighton at the moment, and they are fighting to get over the line in a European spot for next season.

That would come with its own set of pressures, and the club will need to strengthen its squad massively in the transfer window, especially with bigger clubs targeting some of their existing players.

This looks like a game to get Brighton back on track, however. Their opponents are in a mess and the Seagulls can capitalise.

Star Man – Deniz Undav

Undav has provided an unlikely source of goals in recent games, scoring in his last two appearances and offering an alternative option to De Zerbi.

Southampton FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

     Can play with freedom now

Che Adams may be fit enough to re-join team

Reasons to be fearful

Won none of their last four meetings with Brighton

Have lost a club record 24 games this season

Last weekend confirmed what many football fans had known was coming for some time. Southampton will spend next season in the Championship and it may not be as easy to recover from as what their fans would hope.

In truth, the second tier is a difficult league and the task will be harder considering the rebuilding job that the directors of the club face this summer.

Several key players will leave the club, possibly for Premier League teams, and it remains to be seen how they’ll approach next season.

Now, they have two games remaining to bring some element of joy to their fans, after what has been a dreadful season from start to finish.

Hope isn’t high here, having gone 11 games without victory

Star Man – James Ward-Prowse

This season will have been hard on Ward-Prowse, having watched the club he loves go down. It’ll be even harder to decide what he wants to do next season, and whether he leaves his boyhood club to stay in the top division.

Brighton to have at least 65% possession

Early goal would kill Southampton off

     Both sides could make changes

Brighton have had to play midweek this week to fit in their games in hand, and will do so again next week. We could see one or two changes from Roberto De Zerbi because of that.

Southampton may also make one or two changes, giving some gametime to younger players and those who haven’t had a chance this season.

The home side are heavy favourites here.
