Brazil begin their World Cup 2026 campaign with a blockbuster Group C clash against Africa's highest-ranked side, Morocco. 

While the five-time world champions boast unmatched pedigree on football's biggest stage, there is little separating the two teams at present, with Brazil and Morocco sitting sixth and eighth respectively in the FIFA rankings. That balance of quality and form should make this one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.

The match will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, the venue chosen to host the final of the tournament. Alongside the showpiece event, the stadium will stage seven other matches, including two knockout fixtures. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 AM IST on Sunday.

Head-to-Head Record: Brazil and Morocco have played each other exactly twice and once in a World Cup, with an even head-to-head record of one win each.

Brazil arrive at their 23rd World Cup—the only nation to feature in every edition—still searching for a first title since 2002 and a record-extending sixth crown overall.

Interestingly, their previous longest drought between titles lasted 24 years before ending on American soil in 1994, a piece of history the Seleção will hope to replicate. Before dreaming of lifting the trophy, however, they must overcome a recent hurdle, having been eliminated in the quarter-finals in four of the last five World Cups.

Carlo Ancelotti's side qualified directly from the CONMEBOL qualifiers but arrive with notable absentees, including Rodrygo, Estevão and Éder Militão. 

The squad selection has also raised eyebrows, particularly the omission of João Pedro despite an impressive season that saw him register 29 goal involvements and earn Chelsea's Player of the Season award. Ancelotti's preference for versatile forwards capable of interchanging positions may have influenced that decision.

Brazil's greatest strength lies in their defensive foundation, with Gabriel Magalhães and Marquinhos forming one of the tournament's strongest centre-back pairings, while their wealth of attacking talent can trouble any defence. The main concern is in midfield, where questions remain over Casemiro's age, Bruno Guimarães' fitness, and the lack of proven depth behind them that too an aging one. 

Key Players

Raphinha enters the tournament as one of Brazil's most influential players. The Barcelona winger has flourished under Hansi Flick, playing a pivotal role in the club's recent domestic success and deep Champions League runs. Although injuries disrupted parts of his latest campaign, his creativity and eye for goal remain vital to Brazil's ambitions.

Alongside him is Vinícius Júnior, one of the game's elite attackers. The Real Madrid star continues to deliver goals and assists at the highest level, registering another outstanding season for his club. However, the World Cup offers him a chance to silence critics who feel he has yet to consistently replicate that form in a Brazil shirt.

Breakout Star

Nineteen-year-old Rayan is a name to watch. The Bournemouth youngster earned his call-up after a strong finish to the season, contributing four goal involvements in his last six appearances. Comfortable both out wide and through the middle, his pace, physicality and aerial ability make him an exciting option in attack.

Brazil were hit by a setback during their pre-tournament friendly when full-back Wesley suffered an injury that ruled him out of the World Cup. In response, they have called up Atalanta midfielder Ederson as a replacement.

Morocco Preview

This will be Morocco's third consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall. The Atlas Lions captured global attention in 2022 by becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, and they have only grown stronger since. 

Arriving as reigning Arab Cup and AFCON champions, Morocco will be keen to make another statement, especially with the nation set to co-host the 2030 World Cup.

Their road to qualification was nothing short of dominant. Morocco topped their CAF qualifying group with a perfect 8-0 record, conceding just two goals along the way. 

Guiding them through that campaign was Mohamed Ouahbi, the coach who led Morocco to the Under-20 World Cup title in 2025. Having replaced Walid Regragui only three months ago, the tactically astute manager has already guided the side to an AFCON final and now faces his biggest challenge yet.

Morocco's greatest strength lies in their balance. They are technically gifted, defensively organised, and possess tremendous pace and quality out wide, making them a lethal counter-attacking side. However, there remain concerns over the centre-forward position, with Soufiane Rahimi and Ayoub El Kaabi yet to fully convince as reliable goalscorers. Their pressing game can also lack the intensity and precision needed to trouble the tournament's very best teams.

Key Players 

Achraf Hakimi is the captain and headline star of this Moroccan side. Widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in world football, he is a constant threat going forward and finished among Morocco’s top assist providers in the qualifiers, while also shining for PSG in the Champions League. 

Brahim Díaz is another key figure, having top-scored for the Atlas Lions at the recent AFCON with five goals and two assists. Bilal El Khannouss, Saibari and El Aynoui are also names to watch in a squad full of quality.

Breakthrough star

Having represented France at youth level before recently switching allegiance to Morocco, Ayyoub Bouaddi is one of the most exciting young talents to watch at this World Cup. The 18-year-old midfielder arrives on the back of a breakthrough season with LOSC Lille, where his creativity and vision stood out, creating 21 chances in Ligue 1 at an average of 0.8 per game.

Like Brazil, Morocco have also been dealt a blow by injuries in the build-up to the tournament. Abde Ezzalzouli and Noussair Mazraoui both picked up knocks during the pre-tournament friendlies, with Ezzalzouli subsequently ruled out. Centre-back Nayef Aguerd, who arrived carrying an injury concern, has also been forced to withdraw. In response, Amine Sbai and Marwane Saâdane have been drafted in.

Brazil may have beaten Morocco 3-0 the last time the two sides met at a World Cup, but this promises to be a far sterner test. The Atlas Lions are one of the toughest teams to break down and possess the pace and quality to exploit Brazil's occasional defensive vulnerabilities on the flanks.

That said, the Seleção boast match-winners across the pitch and have the attacking firepower to unlock even the most disciplined defences. 

The tactical battle could prove decisive, and in that regard Carlo Ancelotti's vast experience gives Brazil a slight edge over Mohamed Ouahbi. Even so, this feels like an incredibly close contest, and we are backing an entertaining draw.
