What appears to be one of the most one-sided fixtures of the week sees Chelsea host Champions League debutants Pafos in midweek action. The Blues, currently 13th on 10 points and outside the automatic round-of-16 spots, know that anything less than three points would be a setback.

Pafos sit 26th with six points and would gladly take even a draw. This is the sides’ first UEFA meeting, and Pafos’ first against English opposition. Chelsea boast a formidable European home record and have scored in 21 straight continental games, while Pafos remain winless and goalless away this season.

Chelsea FC Preview

Chelsea’s campaign has spiraled since that memorable 3-0 demolition of Barcelona have the Champions League in November. After that high, the Blues have stumbled to just four wins—two of them against lower-league Charlton and Cardiff—while the rest of the stretch has been marred by  five defeats and five draws.

Meanwhile, their last Champions League outing ended in a flat 2–0 defeat on the road to Atalanta, exposing their frailties once again. A serious dip for a side that came into the season as FIFA Club World Cup champions.

Still, they arrive with a touch of confidence having ended  their winless run of five games in the Premier League after seeing off Brentford 2–0 at the weekend, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro.

Stats that matter

1. Worth noting, that clean sheet against Brentford was Chelsea’s first clean sheet in nine matches across all competitions.
2. The Blues have lost only two of their last 62 UEFA competition group stage/league phase matches at Stamford Bridge.
3. Chelsea have scored in their last 21 European games.

Team News

Beyond the long-term absentees, Chelsea have fresh concerns with Estevao battling illness, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens still in recovery, and Tosin Adarabioyo a major doubt after coming off before the hour with hamstring tightness over the weekend fixture.

Chelsea Probable XI - Sanchez (GK); Acheampong, Fofana, Badiashile, Hato, Fernandez, Santos, George, Pedro, Garnacho, Delap

Pafos F.C. Preview

Not many would have expected a lot from Pafos making their  first Champions League appearance but one could say they have already made it count. Having gone through the rigours of a qualifying round to get here.

The Cypriot side have already picked up some impressive results, including a win over Villarreal (1-0) and draws against Monaco (2-2) and Olympiacos (0-0). That’s a timely warning for Chelsea that this Cypriot outfit isn’t here to make up the numbers, and taking them lightly could be costly.

With two rounds left and their spot in the playoff zone intact, a win in either of the remaining fixtures should be enough to seal the deal.

Stats that matter

1. Pafos are yet to score a Champions League goal on the road.
2. The Cypriot side have won only two of their last seven UEFA competition matches (D3 L2).
3. No player currently in the side has scored more than once in the competition so far.

Team News

A major setback for Pafos as veteran defender David Luiz is expected to miss Wednesday’s clash after limping off just 12 minutes into their weekend defeat. Adding to their worries, both David Goldar and Joao Correia remain doubtful for the trip.

Pafos Probable XI - Michail (GK); Bruno, Luckassen, Langa, Pileas; Pepe, Sunjic, Quina, Dragomic, Silva, Orsic.

Given the clear gap in experience and quality, Chelsea come into this fixture as strong favourites. They are unbeaten in their last 17 European home games (W13 D4), underlining their dominance at Stamford Bridge. However, recent Premier League performances have shown occasional lapses against supposedly weaker opposition.

If Pafos can remain compact, disciplined, and frustrate the hosts, a hard-fought draw cannot be ruled out. That said, if Chelsea find their rhythm early, it is difficult to see any outcome other than a home victory.
