The second CAF World Cup qualifying semifinal sees Cameroon take on DR Congo at the Al-Barid Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, with kickoff at 12:30 AM IST and no home advantage for either side. Both teams finished second in their respective groups—Cameroon with 19 points and Congo with 22—and now battle for a spot in the final, where the winner will face either Nigeria or Gabon for a ticket to the 2026 inter-confederation playoffs in Mexico.

Head-to-head Record: Cameroon have long dominated this matchup, winning eight of the 14 meetings, while DR Congo have managed just one victory.

Cameroon Preview

The Indomitable Lions will feel hard done by after finishing second in their group behind Cape Verde—a team sitting nearly 20 places below them in the FIFA rankings. Their only defeat came against Cape Verde, but it was the costly goalless draws with Angola and bottom side Eswatini that truly derailed their campaign.

Adding to the frustration, Cameroon topped their group for goals scored with 17—making those two goalless draws sting even more. In the end, those six dropped points proved decisive, leaving them four points shy of top spot. But that’s in the past—Cameroon’s focus now is simple: beat a DR Congo side ranked 60th in the world, whether it’s in regulation, extra time, or on penalties.

Bryan Mbeumo will be Cameroon’s headline act, arriving in top gear after five goals and an assist for Amorim’s United — a form that earned him the Premier League Player of the Month award. He’ll be keen to carry that momentum into the qualifiers and build on his four-goal haul so far.

With the stakes rising, Cameroon’s coach has turned to experience, recalling midfielders Yvan Neyou and Jean Onana along with defenders Enzo Boyomo and Darlin Yongwa to solidify the squad. In turn, Samuel Kotto and Junior Tchamadeu have been left out as the Indomitable Lions look for the right blend of stability and impact.

Cameroon Probable Starting Lineup -  A Onana (GK); Tchatchoua, Castelletto, Nouhou, Nagida; Avom, Baleba, Anguissa; Nkoudou, Eyong, Mbeumo

Congo DR Preview

For Sébastien Desabre’s men, this clash is a shot at history—a chance for DR Congo to become only the second team from their nation to reach a World Cup, following their lone appearance as Zaire back in 1974. And they'll know however that they blew a golden chance to top Group B and qualify directly for the World Cup, having let a 2-0 lead slip at home to Senegal in September.

That 3-2 defeat proved costly, leaving the Leopards two points adrift of the group leaders.  Nonetheless, they enter this clash in strong form, having won seven group games (won the last two), netted 15 goals, and conceded just six—a record that underlines their balance and belief heading into the semifinals.

All eyes in the Congo camp will be on Cedric Bakambu, who’s been in red-hot form with three goals in their last four qualifiers. The 34-year-old enters Thursday’s clash just two strikes short of Dieumerci Mbokani’s national record — a milestone he’ll be eager to chase down as the knockouts begin.

A few familiar faces from Congo’s previous squad—goalkeeper Dimitri Bertaud, defender Dylan Batubinsika, midfielder Grady Diangana, and forwards Jackson Muleka and Afimico Pululu—are missing this time around. But the biggest blow by far is the absence of Yoane Wissa, a key figure whose loss significantly weakens their attacking edge.

DR Congo Probable Starting Lineup -  Mpasi (GK); Masuaku, Mbemba, Tuanzebe, Wan-Bissaka; Mbuku, Moutoussamy, Mukau, Kayembe; Essende, Bakambu

On paper, Cameroon certainly look the stronger side and enter as favourites given their head-to-head dominance. Yet, their away form raises eyebrows, with just one win in five on the road—hardly ideal ahead of a neutral-venue clash.

Still, with all their stars fit and Congo missing Yoane Wissa, the scales tilt firmly in favour of the Indomitable Lions. Elsewhere, the bookmakers have their say—Cameroon are favourites at 2.25, while DR Congo trail at 3.25, and a draw stands at 2.88, hinting at a tight contest on the cards.
