Round two of AFCON 2025 sets up a virtual knockout in Group F as Gabon meet Mozambique at Stade Adrar on Sunday evening. Both sides arrive wounded after identical 1–0 defeats—Gabon edged out by Cameroon and Mozambique undone by holders Ivory Coast—leaving little margin for error this time around.

Current Standings: With identical numbers, both sides are placed 3rd in Group F with no points from their opening match.

Head-to-head Record: In a rivalry still in its early days, Gabon hold the edge, winning two of the  three meetings, while losing once.

Gabon Preview

The Panthers’ opening-day Central African derby against Cameroon went off script almost immediately. Etta Eyong’s sixth-minute goal—born of a preventable defensive lapse—set the tone for a difficult evening. Once behind, the task of breaking down a resolute Cameroonian backline proved to be an immense challenge that defined the rest of the match.

Desperate to change the momentum, coach Moubamba rolled the dice by introducing stars Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina as early as the 33rd minute. However, the changes failed to spark the necessary response, with Gabon mustering just two shots in a toothless display. Moving forward, the coaching staff will likely need to rethink their strategy and prioritize lining up their best XI from the opening whistle rather than chasing the game.

While the pre-match spotlight naturally fell on headline names like Aubameyang, Lemina, and Bouanga, it was Didier N’Dong who quietly impressed on opening night. The industrious midfielder rose to the challenge—winning four of five tackles, nine of 11 duels, and every aerial contest—while even chipping in with two shots. Amid the star names failing to fire, his work rate makes him the one to watch in the next fixture.

Gabon Probable Starting Lineup - Mbaba (GK) ; Oyono, Ecuele Manga, Moussounda, Ekomie, N’Dong, Mario Lemina, Clench Loufilou, Boaunga, Openda, Aubameyang.

Mozambique Preview

As the lowest-ranked side in the group, Mozambique defied expectations with a gritty defensive display against defending champions Ivory Coast. The Mambas showcased impressive resolve, holding the heavy favorites at bay until half-time. Their disciplined structure frustrated the opposition early on, proving they are not simply here to make up the numbers.

Unfortunately, their resistance broke shortly after the restart when they conceded the decisive goal. While goalkeeper Ernan made superb saves to keep them in the contest, the attack was toothless. Managing just three shots, they offered little threat, with Catamo’s dribbling providing the only brief spark of creativity upfront.

Ernan Siluane was the undeniable standout, pulling off crucial stops to prevent a heavier defeat. Moving forward, the team will continue to lean on his heroics between the posts. However, to get results, the coach needs to unlock more attacking firepower from forwards like Catamo and Stanley Ratifo in the next match.

Mozambique Probable Starting Lineup - Ernani Siluane (GK);  Reinildo Mandava, Bruno Langa, Mexer, Nanani, Kambala,  Alfonso Amade, Guima, Witi, Geny Catamo, Stanley Ratifo.

Despite their opening-night defeat, Gabon will take heart from a six-game run unbeaten in regulation time before facing Cameroon. Mozambique, by contrast, have managed just two wins in their last nine, and with Gabon boasting greater attacking quality and experience, the Panthers head into this clash as clear favourites.
