After falling to eventual champions Mohun Bagan in last season’s semi-finals, Jamshedpur FC kick off their new campaign at home against Mohammedan SC on Sunday at 5 PM. For the visitors, last year ended in a wooden-spoon finish, and they arrive determined to script a far more competitive story this time.

Head-to-head record: Jamshedpur FC have an unblemished record over Mohammedan SC in the ISL, having won both their matches.

Jamshedpur FC Preview

There’s been a major change off the pitch for the Men of Steel, as Khalid Jamil departed to take charge of the national team. Stepping back into the spotlight is a familiar figure: Owen Coyle.

Coyle returns to the Men of Steel dugout after his 2020–22 stint, when he led the club to the Winners’ Shield. Once again tasked with a reset, the Scot inherits a revamped squad following 18 departures and 10 arrivals.

The rebuild is most visible in attack, with Madih Talal, Raphael Messi Bouli, and Manvir Singh adding flair and firepower, while Prabir Das, Nikola Stojanovic, and Germanpreet Singh bring valuable experience. Crucially, key overseas pillars Stephen Eze, Rei Tachikawa, and Lazar Cirkovic have been retained.

On the fixture front, Jamshedpur will play 13 matches this season, eight of them at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, with four away outings. A massive advantage considering the Men or Steel ended with the third best numbers at home last season.  The date and venue for their final clash against Odisha FC are yet to be confirmed.

Key Player

Jamshedpur’s biggest weapon is their frontline — pace, power, and a clear eye for goal. But in tight contests, set-pieces often decide the outcome. That’s where Nikola Stojanović’s calmness on the ball and quality delivery could prove decisive. Against a Mohammedan side likely to sit deep, his ability to unlock a stubborn defence may be the key to opening the game up.

Jamshedpur Probable XI -  Albino Gomes (GK);  Nikhil Barla, Stephen Eze, Sarthak Golui, Mark Zothanpuia, Vincy Barretto, , Nikola Stojanovic, Madih Talal, Mohammad Sanan,  Manvir Singh, Raphael Messi Bouli.

Mohammedan SC Preview

It’s only the second ISL season for the Black Panthers, but their debut campaign turned out to be a tough initiation for them as the side finished at the bottom of the table with just two wins and 15 defeats.

Improvement is the clear aim, yet the road ahead is far from smooth. After playing their home games at Kishore Bharati Krirangan last season, Mehrajuddin Wadoo’s side must now adapt to a new base, the JRD Tata Sports Complex — which also hosts their opening clash against Jamshedpur FC.

The hurdles don’t stop there. A transfer ban means they will field an all-Indian squad with no overseas players. With so much to navigate even before kickoff, the realistic aim for Mohammedan SC may simply be to stay clear of another last-place finish.

Key Players

The Black Panthers may lack the attacking punch to unsettle bigger sides, so their hopes will rest on defensive discipline and structure. Much of that responsibility falls on 20-year-old captain

Pukhramnam Dinesh Meitei, who must marshal the backline while guiding an inexperienced squad.Alongside him, former India U-17 midfielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam is another name to watch for his composure and control in midfield.

Mohammedan Probable XI -  Padam Chettri (GK); Joe Zoherliana, Gaurav Bora, Pukhrambam Dinesh Meitei, Zodingliana Ralte, Amarjit Singh Kiyam, Abhishek Halder, Makan Winkle Chothe, Sajal Bag, Rochharzela, Thokchom Adison Singh.

Jamshedpur FC head into this clash as clear favourites, backed by superior squad depth and home advantage. They also did the double over Mohammedan last season with a commanding 5–1 aggregate scoreline. For the visitors, a compact low block and hopes of grinding out a draw may be the most realistic route.
