Like the South Korea women's national football team, Japan women's national football team also sealed qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup with a dominant quarterfinal win over the Philippines women's national football team. 

Japan cruised to a 7–0 victory, though it took a header from Mina Tanaka in first-half stoppage time to break the deadlock. After that, the goals flowed freely, with Toko Koga scoring twice as Nadeshiko added six more. The statistics underlined their dominance—85% possession, 44 shots, and none conceded. 

With 24 goals scored and still yet to concede in the tournament, Japan look well prepared to go further than their semifinal exit in the previous AFC Women's Asian Cup.

Japan women's team entered the tournament as one of the favourites and have now qualified for their 16th appearance at the AFC Women's Asian Cup, level with China women's  team for the most appearances. 

Their overall head-to-head record also makes them slight favourites against the South Koreans. However, Japan are yet to beat Korea in the Asian Cup, and the Koreans held them to a 1–1 draw in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship last year. Even so, Japan’s current form gives them the edge in this semifinal.
