After falling short in the semifinals, Saudi Arabia and the UAE turn their attention to the third-place playoff at the Khalifa International Stadium on December 18 (4:30 PM IST). Both sides arrive wounded after regulation-time defeats—Saudi edged out 1-0 by Jordan, while the UAE were outclassed 3-0 by Morocco—setting up a pride-on-the-line clash just hours before the final.

Head-to-head Record: Saudi Arabia have traditionally had the edge in this rivalry, winning eight of the 14 meetings, with the UAE managing just three victories.

Saudi Arabia Preview

Much like their extra-time scrap against Palestine in the quarters, the Green Falcons showed grit until the final whistle in the semis against Jordan—but this time it wasn’t enough. They went down 1–0, unable to crack a well-drilled Jordanian defence, managing just one shot on target despite dominating possession with 69%.

Thus it ended Saudi Arabia’s hopes of reclaiming the title they last lifted in 2002. Still, there’s something left to play for—victory over the UAE on Thursday would secure their best finish in the competition since that triumph more than two decades ago. The task, however, is made tougher with first-choice centre-back Al-Ahmed suspended after his late red card in the semifinal.

Salem Al-Dawsari has been Saudi Arabia’s standout performer this campaign, racking up five assists, a goal, 15 key passes and averaging 3.5 shots per 90. But Jordan showed just how vital he is to the Green Falcons, limiting him to only two shots in the semifinal. When Dawsari is muted, Saudi’s attacking spark fades—underlining his importance to their hopes of winning matches.

Saudi Arabia Probable Starting Lineup - Al Aqidi (Gk) ;  Majrashi, Al-Amri, Tambakti, Boushal, Nasser Al-Dawsari, Khaibari, Mohamed Kanno, Salem Al Dawsari, Al Buraikan, Alobud.

United Arab Emirates Preview

After dumping out the defending champions in the quarters, the UAE couldn’t conjure another miracle as their run ended with a 3–0 defeat to Morocco in the semis. In contrast to what the scoreline suggests it wasn't a meek surrender. Al Abyad showed real intent after falling behind early, coming close to an equaliser straight after the break—only for two superb saves to deny them. They stayed in the contest until a late second goal, seven minutes from time, finally ended both the game and their dream of a first-ever Arab Cup final.

Still, Al Abyad can take pride in going a step further than the last edition, where their journey ended in the quarterfinals. Now, they have a golden chance to better their best-ever Arab Cup finish—fourth place back in 1998—and round off this campaign on a high.

Once again, the spotlight will fall on Al Abyad’s goalkeeper Al-Meqebaali. The hero against Algeria and a key reason UAE stayed alive against Morocco, his three saves in the semis underlined his importance. With a tournament-high 13 saves, he could prove decisive—especially if this contest goes the distance.

UAE Probable Starting Lineup - Meqebaali (GK) ; Meloni,  Pimenta, Ivkovic, Amaral, Yahia Nader, Rashid, Bruno Oliveira, Nicolas Gimenez, Al-Ghassani, Caio.

Though the final proved out of reach, Cosmin Olaroiu’s UAE have shown real steel—testing themselves against three of the tournament’s highest-ranked sides and losing just once. That battle-hardening should fuel belief against a Saudi team heavily reliant on Salem Al-Dawsari. Recent history adds to the optimism too, with Al Abyad winning two of the last three meetings. If this one stretches the distance, UAE may just have the edge to pull off another upset.
