What has been an underwhelming group-stage campaign for Mali, who went winless, now gives way to a stern knockout test against a Tunisian side that has blown hot and cold. 

With both teams coming off draws in their final group games, all signs point to a tight, tense affair in Casablanca on Sunday at 12:30 AM IST.

Regarded as dark horses, Mali’s progress echoes AFCON 2023, when Egypt and DR Congo advanced without a group-stage win. The Eagles finished second in Group A with Morocco, Zambia and Comoros , a group that they were expected to dominate the likes of Comoros and Zambia, but had to settle for draws, including a cruel stoppage-time equaliser against Zambia. 

Their issues have been in attack, scoring just twice, yet defensively they’ve been solid, conceding only two goals with standout performance being the Morocco 1–1 draw. 

Expect Mali to lean on that resilience  and discipline against Tunisia as they chase a second straight quarter-final appearance. Meanwhile, the Eagles will have to cope without Amadou Haidara, whose red card in the final group game rules him out of this crucial knockout clash. 

Mali’s two goals in the tournament have both come off the boot of Lassine Sinayoko, who also leads the side for shots. Coincidentally, he was the Eagles’ top scorer in 2023, finding the net against Tunisia in the group stage and again with the decisive strike in the Round of 16 back then. A proven big-game player, Sinayoko is clearly the one to watch in this clash.

Like Mali, Tunisia also finished second in their group that had the likes of Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. However, unlike the Eagles, they managed to claim a win, draw once and lose narrowly in a thrilling 3–2 defeat to Nigeria. 

That contrast defines Tunisia’s campaign so far: far more potent going forward, jumping from just one goal at AFCON 2023 to six in three games this time, yet defensively vulnerable with five conceded. 

Still, their perfect defensive record in World Cup qualifying — no goals conceded in 10 matches — suggests the Carthage Eagles can revert to a more dogged approach when required. 

Tunisia’s key threat is Elias Achouri, who comes into the clash with four goals in his last seven outings for club and country. After striking twice in the AFCON opener, he has gone quiet since. Thus, makes him all the more eager to rediscover his scoring touch when it matters most.

Winning Prediction

This is a tough one to call, with little separating the sides in FIFA rankings or head-to-head history. Mali arrive unbeaten in five matches — though with just one win and only one game scoring more than twice — but their defensive solidity gives them a slight edge. 

With Tunisia’s backline looking shaky at times, Mali should fancy getting on the scoresheet, making them narrow favourites. That said, a tight contest settled by penalties remains a very real possibility.
