The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), gets underway on 21 December with hosts Morocco launching the tournament in Rabat. The Atlas Lions will have the honour of kicking off proceedings against Comoros, with a 12:30 AM IST start on Monday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium—setting the stage for a month of continental drama.

The tournament will feature 24 teams split across six groups, with the top two from each group—along with the four best third-placed sides—progressing to the round of 16. The road to glory will ultimately lead to Rabat, where the final is scheduled to be played on January 18.

Head-to-head Record: Morocco hold the clear upper hand in this young rivalry, having gone unbeaten in all four meetings with three wins and a draw.

Morocco Preview

The hosts come into the tournament brimming with confidence after a triumphant Arab Cup campaign in Qatar, where they edged Jordan 3–2 to lift the trophy. Add to that their status as reigning 2025 CHAN champions and the highest-ranked side in the competition, and Morocco enter AFCON with both momentum and expectation firmly on their side.

Without doubt, the Atlas Lions are overwhelming favourites to reclaim a title they last won back in 1976. Yet AFCON has long been a thorny stage for Morocco, with the semi-finals eluding them for nearly two decades. That history, coupled with home advantage, Walid Regragui helmed side should be doubly motivated to finally turn promise into silverware.

Key Players

Morocco are stacked with talent, but if fit, captain Achraf Hakimi stands out. Despite a recent injury scare, he led the side in creativity during the World Cup qualifiers with three assists and 11 key chances. He is backed by quality in Brahim Díaz, top scorer Ayoub El Kaabi, and Youssef En-Nesyri, giving the hosts plenty of attacking edge.

Morocco  Probable Starting Lineup - Bounou (GK) ; Achraf Hakimi, Yamiq,  Aguerd, Noussair Mazraoui, Aynaoui  Amrabat, Bilal El Khannouss, Ben Seghir, Brahim Diaz, Youssef En-Nesyri.

Comoros Preview

It will be deja vu for Comoros, who once again open a tournament against Morocco after meeting them in the recent Arab Cup. That encounter went the hosts’ way, with Les Coelacantes falling 3–1. That tournament ultimately served as a learning curve, as Comoros exited at the group stage—an outcome they will be determined to overturn when AFCON kicks off.

For inspiration, Comoros can look back to the 2021 AFCON, when they stunned Ghana 3–2 in the group stage and powered their way into a memorable round-of-16 finish.

While they lack a rich footballing pedigree, their rise has been eye-catching more so in 2025: a shock win over 47th-ranked Tunisia, a gritty 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, and a third-place finish at the recent COSAFA Cup.

Key Players

For Comoros, the danger men are Myziane Maolida and Youssouf M’Changama. Maolida led Les Coelacantes in scoring during the World Cup qualifiers, while the experienced M’Changama—boasting 70 caps—remains the team’s creative heartbeat after topping the assist charts in qualifiers.

Comoros Probable Starting Lineup - Aboudou (GK) ; Bakari, Toibibou, Yannis Kari, Ismael Boura, Youssef, Aymeric Ahmed, Rafiki Said, Youssouf M’Changama, Selemani and Maolida.

Morocco arrive on the back of a 17-match unbeaten run and an Arab Cup triumph achieved with a largely second-string side—clear evidence of their depth and quality, something Comoros simply can’t match.

That said, Comoros can be a stubborn outfit, conceding just four goals in AFCON qualifying, and will defend doggedly to keep Moroccans from scoring. Yet, despite the resistance expected, an upset here feels highly unlikely.
