Their best ISL finish under Benali remains fourth in 2024/25, while last season saw them slip to ninth with four wins, four draws and five defeats. 

Their home form was inconsistent, with four wins and four losses, but their away record was even more concerning, as they failed to win a single game on the road.

The Highlanders head into the new season with a relatively young squad averaging 25.6 years, but they have a promising blend of experienced foreign recruits and key Indian talents. Their attack looks particularly strong, with returning star Alaeddine Ajaraie joined by new signings Ethyan Gonzalez and Nikola Ninkovic, alongside Jithin MS, Parthib Gogoi, Redeem Tlang and Lalrinzuala Lalbiaknia. 

However, defensive solidity remains a concern, although the signing of promising centre-back Pramveer Singh is a step towards addressing that weakness. Overall, NorthEast United look well-equipped on paper, but their defensive improvements will be crucial to their title ambitions.

New head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis has already had a taste of the challenge, guiding the side to the finals of both the Durand Cup and IFA Shield. 

While they suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to East Bengal in the Durand Cup final, they gained some revenge with a 1-0 victory in the IFA Shield final. Alongside their arch-rivals, the Mariners will be among the leading contenders for the ISL title this season.
