It’s hard to imagine Nottingham Forest who finished last season 6 points clear of relegation with 9 wins, 9 draws and 20 loses, enter title discussions this season. This season, the Reds have amassed 40 points from 20 games - winning twelve games in the process. Nuno’s men started the new year exactly the way they ended it - with a win over Wolves. This is the first time Forest have won 6 consecutive top-flight fixtures in 58 years.

Could this be the year they win the title? The answer could progressively move towards yes, if they beat league leaders Liverpool at the City Ground on Tuesday. Every player has played their part in this resurgent campaign. Sels was sensational against Wolves, keeping out clean strikes. Gibbs-White has been playing a dual role of both goalscorer and provider. Chris Woods registered his 12th goal of the season and could easily get to 20 by the end. Hudson Odoi and Elanga have been providing pace on the flanks. Milenkovic, Murillo and Aina have been setting the scene for clean sheets with Forest registering 9 out of 20 games. Danilo has made his return to the Reds at the right time. The pieces of the puzzle are fitting well, with the game of the season on the cards.

Liverpool’s last three games have produced three different results in three different competitions. Beginning with an entertaining draw at Anfield against neighbours Manchester United, produced the thrill neutrals were hoping for. The Reds were unlike themselves but still scored 2 goals after going 1-0 down. Defensive vulnerabilities are showing with Trent playing out of position and Konate adjusting to Premier League intensity. Arne Slot’s men didn’t get the result they were hoping for in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup against Spurs. But knowing the second leg is at Anfield should provide much respite. The Reds cruised against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup with the big guns rested for City Ground’s much anticipated test.

Head to Head Record: Both teams have played each other 15 times. Forest have won 4 games, Liverpool have won 7, with 4 draws being played out. Forest have scored 15 goals against Liverpool. While the Reds have scored 25.

Current Standings - Liverpool are currently first on the table with 46 points having played one game fewer. Forest are in 3rd, level on 40 points with Arsenal, with only goal difference separating both teams.

Nottingham Forest FC Preview

The only team to beat Liverpool at home this season is one that has been the season’s surprise package. Nottingham Forest stunned Anfield in a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture in September. If they get the three points at City Ground, it will be the first time Forest do the double over Liverpool in 61 years. Nuno has been in-charge for 13 months now and completely transformed this club into a Premier League giant.

It’s sad that Spurs and Wolves couldn’t give the Portuguese the same platform to produce such results. If Forest win, it would be the third time that a team’s first two losses have come from the same opposition. The Reds are breaking record after record and the fans are loving it - after years struggling to adapt to Premier League demands. Nuno’s men are looking at registering their fourth home league game for the first time in 29 years.

Players to watch out

Matz Sels has been a rock for the midland club. He has kept 9 out of 20 clean sheets. That is more than any other goalkeeper in the competition. Goals win games, but great keeping can win you titles. Such has been the story at Forest. The club record for clean sheets for Sels to reach is 13. The probability of 4 more from 18 is quite high. The Belgian goalkeeper has been touted to currently be the best in the league and it will be interesting to see Mohamad Salah trying to get past him.

Injury - Sangare is ruled out.

Nottingham Forest probable XI - Sels (GK), Milenkovic, Murillo, Aina, Nico Williams (DEF), Dominguez, Anderson, Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi (MID), Chris Wood (FWD).

Liverpool FC Preview

The City Ground has not been an easy place to register a win. Forest have beaten Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool in a midland memory. Although the Reds did win this fixture by a goal last season, things this time are starkly different. Slot’s men could open an interesting gap if they win. Arsenal play Spurs in the North London derby, which makes standings at the top of the table nervy yet exhilarating. The Reds are unbeaten in all their 9 away games this season - winning 7 and drawing 2.

Liverpool have the experience and maturity to win the league. Rarely do managers come to the Premier League and win it in the first season. But Slot has done incredibly well. The last person to do this was Antonio Conte with Chelsea. If Slot can bring sustainability, something Conte didn’t get, then this side could go on and win more. But games like this decide the character of a team. With major players rested on the weekend, Liverpool players will be all fired up to show who’s boss.

Players to watch out

If Forest’s backline are getting credit for their unrelenting work, then so is Liverpool’s front line. Code Gakpo has formed a solid partnership with Luiz Dias and Mohamad Salah.  The Dutchman Gakpo has scored in Liverpool’s last three Premier League games - the longest run of his career. His goal is what got Liverpool ticking against United. The Reds struggled to break United's 3 man defence and could prove equally elusive if Forest deployed the same strategy.

The Egyptian Salah has grown in stature and in games. He has now scored 18 goals in the competition this season. If continues this, scoring 18 goals in 19 games left - Salah will join Erling Haaland as the competition’s highest ever goal scorer in a single campaign. 16 of those goals have all come in the second half. The 2 time golden boot winner has had to be patient. But if there’s any season to go onto breaking records, this is it.

Injury - Joe Gomez and Quansah are both out.

Liverpool probable XI - Allison (GK), Trent, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson (DEF), MacAllister, Gravenberch, Curtis (MID), Salah, Diaz, Gakpo (FWD).

Liverpool should overcome Forest despite their counter-attacking threat. Klopp's side, while not at their peak, have shown resilience. Forest may find the occasion daunting. Expect a Liverpool victory, though it won't be easy.
