Spurs just starting to hit form but face tough Toon test
Tottenham to win 2-0
Tottenham are beginning to make the right noises after a dull start to the season.
After their opening weekend loss to Everton, Spurs have bounced back with three wins inside seven days in their league and cup fixtures, with their best players showing great form.
By progressing through two qualifying rounds of the Europa League, as well as receiving a bye in the Carabao Cup, Spurs have gained a boost in confidence since the opening weekend.
Newcastle have had mixed fortunes, and you feel that this season could be one full of ups and downs.
In contrast to Spurs, they won their opening league fixture, before losing poorly to Brighton showing the inconsistency that has prevented a higher league place in recent seasons.
It’ll be a fast game of football, with plenty of quick, energetic players on the field. Spurs will fancy their chances at home to pick up their second league win of the season.
Predicted 2020/21 finish: 5th
Reasons to be cheerful:
Forward players are in sparkling form
Momentum seems to be building around the club
Reasons to be fearful:
Still a lack of consistency in these types of games
Playing style can be uninspiring
In Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Spurs have two forwards of genuine world class ability.
Son’s four goals last weekend against Southampton, assisted in all of them by Kane, means that they are the Premier Leagues deadliest partnership, with over 100 goals between them.
Eventually, they will be able to add returnee Gareth Bale to the picture, a scenario which fans are dying to see when the Welshman returns from injury.
Spurs were poor in their opener against Everton, however, and even though their results have improved in league and cup since, their style of play still leaves much to be desired.
They also need to figure out how to get the best of our record signing midfielder, Ndombele, though he did impress in midweek.
It is their attacking players which they rely on most, however. With Kane and Son, backed up by the likes of Lucas and Lo Celso, they can be a danger to anyone.
Star Man – Harry Kane
Four assists and a goal against Southampton showed he can create as well as score. If he stays fit, he could break his record of 30 league goals in 2017-18.
Predicted 2020/21 finish: 9th
Reasons to be cheerful
Tricky winger Allan Saint-Maximin hopefully fit
New signings can score goals for them
Reasons to be fearful
Spurs’ attackers can rip through their defence
Will struggle for consistency this season
Newcastle made the headlines on Wednesday evening for their 7-0 victory over Morecambe in the Carabao Cup, something which will do their confidence the world of good.
Morecambe are only in League Two, of course, but several of their players were magnificent in front of goal.
Their problem this season will be maintaining these levels of performance from one match to the next, and may well find that a win like this is followed by defeat.
Especially against the attacking threat which Spurs pose to them, which has beaten them in five of the last six matches.
The good news is that rapid winger Saint-Maximin could be fit for this match, and like Wolves’ Adama Traore can be difficult to stop when he gets going.
But their defence can often fold under the sort of pressure that they will face this weekend, and the likes of Son and Kane will give them a very difficult time.
Star Man – Callum Wilson
Had a rest in midweek so will be fit and raring to go against Spurs.
Spurs will look to play in Son wherever possible
Kane to get on the scoresheet again
Newcastle to struggle to contain Spur’s pacey attack
Spurs’ attackers will be on a high after their scoring spee last weekend and will go straight for Newcastle’s throats on Sunday.
They were successful with balls over the top of the Southampton defence, so Newcastle’s defenders will likely spend a lot of time running back towards their own goal.
If they can get Saint-Maximin running at Spurs’ defence, they can cause problems, and Callum Wilson will be keen to continue his positive start at the club.
But Spurs are favourites to win here and continue their good form.
