Unai Emery takes his high-flying Aston Villa to local rivals Wolves this weekend, with the club looking to bounce back from defeat against Manchester United.

It was their first taste of defeat in 11 games, with the club rising from 11th to 6th during that period. In truth, their performance levels have dropped ever so slightly over the past few weeks, and they have just one win from their last three after racking up five on the spin.

They could start this game in 8th, with Brighton playing in midweek, so a win would be required to return into a European position.

Wolves have also stuttered a little in recent weeks, losing two of their last three, including a 6-0 humiliation away to Brighton last weekend.

The club is virtually safe from relegation, but another win from their remaining four games would make it absolutely certain.

Wolverhampton Wanderers FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful:

Won their last three home games

Unbeaten against Villa in their previous four meetings

Reasons to be fearful:

6-0 humiliation against Brighton will have knocked confidence

Will want to avoid complacency despite achieving safety

The main task for Wolves during the remaining four games of the season will be to stay competitive and fight for points in the same manner they have been in recent months.

They have almost certainly claimed safety under Julen Lopetegui, with 37 points, but they will want to ensure that complacency doesn’t creep into their game.

Wolves were well off the pace against Brighton at the weekend and Lopetegui will have been shocked at how easily a very good Brighton cut through them.

Positively, they are usually much better at home, winning each of their last three. They’ve also claimed two wins and two draws from their last four meetings with Villa, meaning that they’ll enter this game in a confident mindset.

Star Man – Ruben Neves

When playing Aston Villa, it’s important that your midfield is your best area of the pitch. Neves has been a stalwart for Wolves in previous seasons and usually gives a calm, composed influence.

Aston Villa FC Preview

Reasons to be cheerful

Scored in 20 of their 21 games under Emery

Watkins has been excellent away from home this season

Reasons to be fearful

Haven’t beaten Wolves in their last four

Performance levels have dropped in their last three matches

When Aston Villa beat Newcastle 3-0, most fans rightly praised the job that Unai Emery was doing at the club, and how they were now one of the favourites to claim a European spot at the end of the season.

They are still in the hunt for a top seven position, although their recent performances have slipped from what was a remarkable 10-game unbeaten run.

Specifically, Villa were a little fortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw away to Brentford, while their 1-0 win over Fulham doesn’t give their opponents enough credit for almost coming back to secure a point.

Against Manchester United, they were definitely second-best in the first half, although admittedly came back stronger after the break.

They haven’t beaten Wolves in their last four, but need a positive result here to stay in the hunt.

Star Man – Ollie Watkins

Watkins wasn’t given a sniff in front of goal against Manchester United, but the in-form striker has netted in six of his last seven away appearances.

Will be a game where possession is shared

Wolves are far more dangerous at home

Villa have to raise performance levels

Wolves have been such a topsy-turvy team this season, especially when it comes to the difference between their home and away form.

At Molineux, they have been in fine shape recently and will cause problems for this Villa side in transitions.

Where Villa have the upper hand is in attacking power, with Watkins, Ramsey, McGinn and Buendia all capable of contributing.

However, like their first meeting of the season, this one could end all square.
