The Adelaide Oval is a sports ground located in Adelaide, South Australia. The stadium was built in 1871 and has undergone significant advancements since its inception. Predominantly used for cricket, the ground has also been used for other sports such as Rugby, Soccer, Aussie Rules, and Tennis to name a few.
The Adelaide Oval remains one of the most picturesque venues in world cricket due to its position, situated in the midst of gardens and trees and with the spire of St Peter's Cathedral as a backdrop. The stadium has a sophisticated floodlight system and plays host to regular day-night fixtures. The lights under the roof of the grandstands went through refurbishment and were eventually replaced by LED lights in November 2017.
Between the years 2012 and 2014, the Adelaide Oval underwent sweeping changes to its infrastructure in a bid to expand the seating capacity. At present times, the stadium can now hold up to a maximum of 50000 spectators. The biggest attendance ever recorded at this venue was 62, 543 achieved in 1965 during the SANFL final between Port Adelaide and Sturt.
The ground incorporates the shape of an exact oval which makes straight six-hitting a thing of the past but makes sixes square of the wicket a commonality. The stadium involves three giant stands namely Riverbank Stand, Eastern Stand, and Western Stand, and a heritage-listed scoreboard, which stands alongside a new digital scoreboard
The venue has been caught in the storm of numerous controversies in the past. The venue had the reputation for having one of the worst types of pitches and was never far away from gaining negative attention in the 19th century. The venue reportedly hosted its first Test way back in 1884-85, a Test that was famously marred with controversies on English spectators' appearance and who would umpire.
Then in 1932-33, the famous “bodyline” saga surfaced when Bill Woodfull and Bert Oldfield were struck by deadly blows which led to more tensions on the third day as police were dispersed to quell the spectators. Those days are long gone now and the Adelaide Oval now enjoys a period of peace and tranquility. Apart from hosting international cricket fixtures over the course of two centuries, the venue actively takes part in hosting domestic first-class and List-A fixtures along with T20 franchise cricket leagues like Big Bash.

The Adelaide Oval incorporates a drop-in pitch. The surface may also have grass on it which can aid the swing bowlers early on. In red-ball cricket, the quick bowlers get ample assistance off the surface in the form of bounce and seam movement. However, when the surface behind develops wear and tear then spinners can come into the mix as well.
In the shortest format of the game, the venue has seen some massive scores. In T20 cricket, the surface is more balanced in nature and the ball comes onto the bat nicely making it ideal for big hitters to score some rapid runs. The average first innings score at the venue is 173 and 166 in T20 and T20I cricket respectively and teams have crossed the 190-mark on 13 occasions. Batting first and setting a big total should be the mantra on this pitch.
In men’s T20 cricket teams have been more successful in defending targets successfully but we see a different trend in Women’s T20 cricket. Out of 29 Women’s T20 matches played, 19 of them have been won by chasing. Compared to other cricket stadiums around the world, the Adelaide Oval has a vast playing area which is 190.2 m long and 126.2 m wide. The ground has a huge straight boundary in excess of 80m while the square boundaries are 62-63 meters on either side.
