The Sharjah International Cricket Stadium is the oldest operational cricket stadium in the whole of UAE. Built in the early 1980s’, this historic stadium needs no introduction. Decades of history have been associated with the ground. The Sharjah International Cricket Stadium served as an all-stop destination for epic India-Pakistan rivalry throughout the 80s, 90s, and early 2000. Back in the day, the stadium was equipped with fewer facilities. But as years rolled by, the administration was quick to add more enhancements and worked extensively in increasing the seating capacity and setting up the floodlight system.
Moreover, the stadium also holds an estimated seating capacity of nearly 16000. During its formative years, the venue quickly garnered the attention of subcontinent cricket boards as the popularity of one-day cricket exploded following India's World Cup win in 1983. At present, the stadium holds the record for hosting the highest number of ODI matches (294) as of March 17, 2024. Furthermore, as a matter of fact, Sharjah Cricket Stadium is the first GCC LED-lit cricket stadium that uses innovative and advanced control systems and DMX Technology.
The venue was selected to host 11 league matches of the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup. Besides, the venue has also welcomed several prestigious one-day tournaments since its inception in the 1980s. These include but are not limited to the Champions Trophy, Austral-Asia Cup, Sharjah Cup, Pepsi Champions Trophy.
Most notably the first phase of the 2014 IPL season and parts of both the 2020 and 2021 seasons as well. Fast forward to today, the Sharjah Cricket Stadium is chosen as one of the two venues to host the upcoming matches of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in UAE starting on October 3.

Sharjah International Cricket Stadium, Sharjah Pitch Report
The pitch at Sharjah International Cricket Stadium is generally dry in nature and gets slower and lower as the game progresses. The pitch predominantly favours the bowlers and batting can prove quite arduous against the slow bowlers. Batters will need to work hard for their runs and will need to use the long handle sensibly to manufacture the big shots.
In the longer format, the deterioration of the surface allows the spinners to come into the equation and dictate the terms. However, in the T20 format, there is still light at the end of the tunnel for the batters. Sharjah International Cricket Stadium is reportedly much smaller compared to its counterparts in the UAE and batters can clear the boundary at will once they spend enough time in the middle.
Past records from this venue clearly suggest that the team batting first has emerged victorious in more instances as opposed to teams batting last. Conditions tend to stay favorable for batting in the first innings and teams looking to bat first should take the advantage of it and post a strong total on the board.
Hence, the toss will play a key part and whoever wins it should look to put enough runs on the board. In comparison to some of the iconic venues around the globe, the boundary dimensions at Sharjah Cricket Stadium are on the smaller side. The straight boundary dimension is approx 62 meters while the square boundary dimensions amount to around 65 meters. The average first-innings T20I score in Men’s cricket is reported to be around 151 while in Women’s T20I cricket, the number comes down to just 119.
