India have announced an 18-member squad for the much-awaited Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, starting on November 22. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and pacer Harshit Rana received their maiden call-up for the Test series. Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran has also been rewarded for his consistent domestic performances with a call-up in the main squad.
No Shami, Kuldeep for BGT
Rohit Sharma will lead the squad on the Australia tour with Jasprit Bumrah being his deputy. Kuldeep Yadav will not take flight to Australia due to his chronic left groin issue. India relied on more pacers in the squad as they have dropped Axar Patel. However, Axar will join the Indian T20I squad for the South Africa tour.
Mohammed Shami, who has been out of the Indian squad since November last year, also missed out on a place in the final squad due to the fitness issue. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Indian pace attack which also includes Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana.
Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini and Khaleel Ahmed have been picked up as reserves. The trio will also be part of the India A squad. Veteran Ravichandran Ashwin will lead the spin department alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. All three were part of the previous series win in 2020-21.
Rohit Sharma to Miss One of the Two Tests
India's Test captain Rohit Sharma will miss one of the first two Tests against Australia due to personal reasons. This opens the door for young talent, Abhimanyu Easwaran, to potentially make his Test debut. The 29-year-old has been consistently impressive in the domestic circuit, making him a strong contender for a spot in the Indian Test team.
India's tour of Australia will be historic as it will feature five Tests for the first time. The series kicks off in Perth on November 22nd, followed by a day-night Test in Adelaide. The remaining three Tests will be held in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. Our Cricket betting analysts suggest that India's chances in the series might be affected by Rohit Sharma's absence, but the team's depth and experience could still make them a formidable force.
