The first major trade ahead of the IPL 2026 trading window has been completed, with five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings finally making a huge move by acquiring Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards from Sunrisers Hyderabad. In return, they have sent left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed and Australian right-arm medium-fast bowler Nathan Ellis, with both franchises completing the four-player trade as approved by the BCCI.
This trade certainly puts an end to the debate surrounding the potential trade of Hardik Pandya by either franchise. SRH offloaded Livingstone's massive ₹13 crore salary as CSK secured him for ₹6 crore, freeing up much-needed cap space for Hyderabad ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Jack Edwards also is a significant addition to the CSK squad.
Who Benefits From This Trade?
Liam Livingstone played a pivotal role in the 2025 IPL final, delivering a crucial cameo in the middle overs to help RCB lift their maiden title. Currently out of the England national team setup, he is not an injury-prone player and offers full availability for the entirety of the tournament, a reliability CSK desperately covet given the persistent injury woes their squad has suffered over the past two seasons.
He injects stability into the middle order and acts as a proven finisher who can complement Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis to form a destructive middle-order trio. His presence also grants the top order the license to go berserk and play high-intent, risk-free cricket from ball one. In addition, Livingstone brings valuable utility with the ball, capable of bowling both off-spin and leg-spin as a versatile multi-dimensional option.
Jack Edwards serves primarily as a secondary or backup option to Jamie Overton. Overton enjoyed a strong 2026 campaign for CSK and remains the preferred first-choice starter ahead of Edwards.
For SRH, whose strong batting lineup contrasted sharply with an underperforming bowling unit last season, this trade directly addresses two critical phases of play. Khaleel Ahmed excels with the new ball, swinging it both ways to serve as the ideal foil alongside Pat Cummins up front.
Meanwhile, Nathan Ellis brings deceptive pace variations and slower deliveries that make him exceptionally effective in the death overs. With T. Natarajan also returning to the Orange Army, SRH now one of the title favourites in the 2027 IPL season.
