Mumbai Indians' ace pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, is set to miss the initial phase of the IPL 2025 season due to an ongoing recovery from a back injury that has kept him sidelined since January. According to sources, Bumrah is likely to join the Mumbai Indians squad by early April, subject to clearance from the medical team at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Injury Details and Recovery Progress
Bumrah sustained a stress-related injury in his lower back during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test against Australia in Sydney on January 4. The injury forced him to miss the recently concluded Champions Trophy, which India won earlier this month. This is the first time Bumrah has suffered a back injury since undergoing surgery in March 2023.
Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, had previously stated that Bumrah needed at least five weeks of rest starting from the Sydney Test, as advised by the BCCI medical team. Although Bumrah was included in India's provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, continued discomfort led to his withdrawal from the final squad.
Uncertain Return Date
While the exact number of IPL matches Bumrah will miss remains unclear, Mumbai Indians will be without their star bowler for at least their first three fixtures. The team’s campaign kicks off against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai on March 23, followed by games against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on March 29 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home on March 31.
The medical team is closely monitoring Bumrah’s recovery, but there is no definite timeline for his return to full fitness. His unique bowling action has made him prone to back issues, prompting the BCCI to carefully manage his workload.
Shane Bond’s Warning
Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond, who has previously worked with Bumrah as Mumbai Indians’ bowling coach, has expressed concerns about the bowler’s recovery process. Bond mentioned that the transition from IPL’s T20 format to Test cricket is a "danger period" for Bumrah.
With India scheduled to travel to England in June for a five-Test series barely a month after the IPL concludes, managing Bumrah’s workload effectively will be critical. Bond also warned that another injury in the same spot where Bumrah underwent surgery could be a "career ender."
Impact on Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians are expected to rely on their bench strength to fill the void left by Bumrah’s absence. The team’s management will be hoping for his quick recovery and clearance to join the squad early in April. As the tournament progresses, fans and analysts will keep a close eye on his fitness, especially with India’s upcoming Test series in England.

The cricketing world awaits Bumrah’s return, but his well-being remains the top priority for both Mumbai Indians and Indian cricket authorities. Stay tuned for further updates on his recovery and eventual comeback.
